Chủ đề Global Issues có thể là xem là chủ đề xuất hiện trong Writing Task 2 với tần suất cao nhất. In many countries, the cost of living is on the rise. What effects do higher prices have on individuals and society? What can be done to solve those problems?

The cost of living has been rising in some countries in the world. This is a major hindrance to the wellbeing of individuals and our society as a whole, and solutions to this problem would be for individuals to lead a less material-oriented lifestyle and for the government to curb taxes.

On an individual level, growing cost of living has made life much harsher for people living in certain parts of the world, especially in megacities. Escalating prices have made paying for basic necessities a much harder task than before, and indeed, many middle-to-low-income families living in big cities around the world are reported to have been struggling a lot to get by. On a societal level, increased living expenses and other associated issues such as inflation bring in its wake social disorder and crimes. We all know the tragic stories of rich people declaring bankruptcy and eventually contemplating suicide, or impoverished ones resorting to stealing for survival.

One good solution is that individuals can take advantage of a minimalist, non-materialistic lifestyle to cope with high cost of living. For example, we can always abstain from having a new phone every year, watching a new movie released every month or having too much furniture, and the money saved from such unnecessary purchases can be better utilized to cover the bills and other basic needs. From the government’s perspective, many policymakers consider cutting tax as a way of reducing cost of living. Lowering tax on food, housing and other necessities can help ameliorate the effects of high living expenses. In conclusion, we are all heavily impacted by the increased cost of living. Leading a minimalist life and cutting tax can be considered as sensible ways of mitigating the problem.
