Tổng quan dạng Advantages and Disadvantages
1. Thế nào là đề Writing dạng Advantage and Disadvantage
Dạng bài Advantages & Disadvantages là sẽ nêu ra ý kiến/ tình huống/ vấn đề và yêu cầu người viết phải đưa nhận xét, quan điểm của mình về mặt tích cực (advantages) và tiêu cực (disadvantages) của ý kiến/ tình huống/ vấn đề đó.
2. Cách loại đề Writing dạng Advantage and Disadvantage
Với dạng bài Advantages – Disadvantages đề bài sẽ đưa ra một vấn đề hoặc ý kiến và yêu cầu bạn phải chỉ ra những nhược điểm cũng như ưu điểm của nó.
Thông thường dạng bài Advantages – Disadvantages được chia làm 3 loại:
Loại 1: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.
E.g.: The internet has made knowledge immediately available to people through computers and smartphones all around the world. Much of this knowledge is also free. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.
Ở dạng đề đầu tiên này, người viết chỉ đơn giản được yêu cầu chỉ ra mặt tích cực và tiêu cực của một ý kiến/tình huống/vấn đề và không cần phải viết thêm về mặt nào “lấn át” mặt nào, hoặc là đưa ra ý kiến riêng của bạn. Cấu trúc bài viết của loại đề này do đó cũng vô cùng đơn giản: mở bài – ưu điểm/nhược điểm – nhược điểm/ưu điểm – kết bài.
Loại 2: Do the advantages/ disadvantages outweigh the disadvantages/ advantages?
E.g.: Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Với dạng đề 2, ngoài việc đưa ra mặt tích cực và tiêu cực thì người viết còn cần phải làm rõ mặt nào chiếm ưu thế hơn từ mở bài cho đến khi kết bài. Việc lựa chọn mặt nào “lấn át” sẽ ảnh hưởng đến cấu trúc bài viết của bạn, ví dụ nếu bạn chọn advantages outweigh thì trong bài sẽ phải nêu rõ lý do vì sao lại như thế, cũng như khẳng định rõ điều này trong câu chủ đề.
Loại 3: Describe the advantages and disadvantages. Give your own opinion.
E.g.: A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not managed correctly. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world. Give your own opinion.
Ở dạng bài thứ 3, ngoài việc chỉ ra ưu nhược điểm thì người viết sẽ còn phải dựa vào đó để nêu lên ý kiến cá nhân của mình. Thân bài bài viết của bạn sẽ bao gồm các đoạn văn thể hiện mặt tích cực, tiêu cực và đoạn thể hiện ý kiến.
2. Cấu trúc dạng Advantages and Disadvantages (Structure)
Tương tự như những dạng bài khác của phần Writing task 2, bố cục của một bài viết dạng Advantages – Disadvantages gồm 3 phần chính.

| Các bạn có thể đưa ra ý kiến của mình rằng bản thân đồng tình hay không với ý kiến/ tình huống/ vấn đề và giải thích cho ý kiến của mình dựa vào mặt tích cực/ tiêu cực của nó. Sau đó, bạn có thể đưa ra thêm một ví dụ để làm ý kiến của mình trở nên thuyết phục hơn. |
4. Conclusion
| Ở đây, bạn sẽ làm tương tự như không có outweigh, tuy nhiên sẽ thêm 1, 2 câu về ý kiến riêng của mình để kết lại bài. |

Sample 1
In the past, most people worked for small businesses, while more people now work for large businesses. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for large businesses?
Due to advances in technology and the job market, many people who worked in small companies nowadays work for large ones. Certainly, there are positive and negative points in both places. This essay will discuss what are the advantages and disadvantages of working for a huge business.
On the one hand, working for a huge company can be a great experience once workers have more opportunities and better conditions of job that lead to a satisfactory salary. These benefits can motivate individuals to choose this kind of site rather than small companies. For instance, working for a large and well-known company sited in big metropolitans, the worker has more chance to choose where city he wants to live. In other words, the person has more opportunity to know other cities, and cultures and this way to improve his networking.
But on the other hand, having a job in a huge company can lead to competition among workers in order to promote an uncontrolled rance for being promoted and also a life without work-life balance owing to excess of activities. For example, the worker always needs to find out ways to stand out of crowd. In addition, this competition among people is unhealthy, damaging their mental health. The more individuals are thinking only about occupation, money, and promotion, the more mental and physical disorders they will have. Damaging mental health is not worth it.
In conclusion, there are a plethora of pros and cons to working for large companies. People need to make decisions balancing both sides. This essay argued about the upsides and downsides of one kind of business.
Sample 2
Many foods are shipped from far away. Some people think that eating local foods is more environmentally and economical. Do you think the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?
The shipping of a wide range of foods from other cities or countries may have an adverse impact on locally produced food in this modern world of aggressive competition. However, the latter, in my own eyes, obviously offers more merits than demerits.
On the face of it, the consumption of local food might be said to have certain drawbacks. One of them is the lack of diversity or exotic taste. Without access to strange food from far away, people in Vietnam today, for instance, would feel fed up with a limited number of food choices or would never have a chance to try, and probably enjoy, the taste of a similar type of food which is actually imported from other countries, such as Kobe beef from Japan.
However, compared with food transported from other regions, eating food produced locally is significantly more beneficial in economic, environmental, and educational terms. From an economic point of view, local food does not involve excessive transportation leading to higher and higher costs, especially with increasing fuel prices taken into account.
This is also associated with less damaging effects on the environment related to the shipping of food products by plane from abroad. In terms of education, consuming local food helps nurture patriotism among young generations, orienting them towards preserving and developing the sense of using indigenous products.
In today’s world of globalization, the effort to consume local food is thus playing an indispensable role in maintaining the identity of each and every local culture.
In a word, the downside of eating locally produced food is outweighed by its upside. This is, in actual fact, true from economic, environmental, and educational viewpoints.

Sample 3
Computers are becoming an essential part of school lessons. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.
Nowadays, computers are becoming an indispensable part of school lessons since they act as a plethora of information along with the development of interest amongst the students, however, they do create a sense of dependence on them when used excessively. This essay would highlight how these technological marvels prove to be beneficial for young minds along with their downsides.
A major advantage of using this technology in the study space is that it acts as a virtual library where students can access nearly all the information that they need. For example, pupils can get extra details on any subject be it science or history easily with just the click of a button. Therefore, computers act as a great tool and a helping hand in the learner’s knowledge.
Secondly, when automation is integrated into lessons, students are expected to be more interested in the subjects they are studying. For instance, delivering teaching through interactive smart boards and taking students on virtual field trips as well as using other online resources, surely enhance student engagement and their experience. Thus, smart devices can encourage more active participation in the process of education, which is hard to achieve through traditional methods.
On the other hand, a major disadvantage is a complete dependence as when computers and other technological tools are used constantly, students develop a dependence upon them. To illustrate, pupils, who is not in a habit to do math without using a calculator, lose the ability to solve mathematical problems manually which affects their analytical thinking and brain power. Hence, Students must practice these simple skills without any external aid regularly to ensure that their competency levels do not deteriorate.
In conclusion, I feel that the use of computers for educating children can be of great use, but should be supervised and in my opinion, there should be a provision for using computers only for a specified period instead of the entire day. This would encourage maximum productivity as well as reduce the chances of addiction.
