IELTS Writing task 1

The plans show the ground floor of the library in 2001 and how it was redeveloped in 2009.

Bước 2: Hoàn thành bài luận

The maps illustrate changes that were made to the ground floor of the library between the years 2001 and 2009.

Overall, even though areas for displaying three original categories of books were still retained, these underwent relocation eight years later, making room for the incorporation of various other types of books. This ground floor was also modernized with the introduction of interactive forms of media as well as computer facilities.

Regarding changes on the southern section, upon entering the ground floor in 2001, readers got access to a librarian’s desk directly facing them, and stairs on their right-hand side. Eight years later, redevelopment plans show that no changes were made to these facilities, whereas the area for displaying self help books to the left was relocated northwards and reduced significantly in terms of size, making way for two cubicles dedicated to showing history and fiction books.

In terms of redevelopments taking place on the northern half of the library, in the north-west area, where there was once a section for the display of books specializing in history, visitors were better catered for as they benefited from being able to read books of four various types, which were law, economics, kitchen and self-help, stretching from north to south. Another noticeable change is that there used to be an area designated for fiction books at the rear of the ground floor, but it had been transformed into that for books read by children by 2009. The central part also saw major alterations, with eight square tables being replaced by four longer and rectangular tables, and a section for newspapers and periodicals being converted into that for films and DVDs, to the south of which was computers. Finally, the open space behind the tables was turned into a children’s area.

Topic sentence: Some people might say that old people should make use of their money to enjoy life, but this viewpoint is flawed, given the fact not all old people have been able to achieve financial stability.  Acknowledgement of an opposing viewpoints:  – Some argue against allowing the elderly to work, suggesting they should rely on their savings for a comfortable retirement. – Money is seen as a means to fulfill personal aspirations. Refuting these viewpoints:  – Not all elderly individuals have sufficient savings. – Allowing them to work provides financial support and reduces pressure on pension systems.

Topic sentence: There are additional benefits to lifting restrictions on elderly employment, particularly in terms of education and health. Supporting ideas: – Elderly workers can pass on valuable experience and knowledge to younger generations. – Continued employment offers social interaction and mental stimulation, reducing feelings of isolation. – Engaging in meaningful work promotes cognitive function and contributes to a sense of purpose and fulfillment in old age.

Bước 3: Hoàn thành bài luận

Allowing the elderly to remain in the workforce is thought to be a sensible choice, on condition that these people are capable of doing so. While acknowledging certain arguments against this school of thought, I personally believe that such a proposal should be adopted widely. 

In financial terms, those questioning the efficacy of allowing the elderly to work regardless of how old they are might argue that individuals at this stage of life should draw upon their savings to enjoy their life to the fullest. According to this theory, there is a widespread acknowledgement and societal norm that money is not an end goal itself, but instead a means to an end, or in other words a tool for people to fulfill their personal aspirations and be able to passionately engage in any activities without financial constraints. Though reasonable this argument seems to be, it fails to factor in the fact that not all people approaching their retirement age are able to save sufficiently, and some are still struggling financially to afford basic necessities in their daily life. Given this, removing restrictions on working age allows old workers, especially financially disadvantaged ones, to continue to be able to earn money by themselves. Moreover, remaining employed also means that the pressure on the pension systems would be reduced and the stability of social welfare programs would be sustained, as there were fewer old people with access to pension eligibility. 

There are further convincing arguments from educational and health perspectives that justify the proposal of lifting restrictions on working age. On education grounds, senior employees have accumulated a wealth of experience during their long working life, and as a result these experienced employees can not only contribute to the development and prosperity of an organization through their expertise and wisdom, but they can also act as mentors and coaches for young workers entering the workforce, thereby ensuring intergenerational transmission of knowledge and skills. Another point worth taking into account is that offering more employment opportunities for older individuals could have positive implications for their health and overall well-being. In fact, it might be easy for aging individuals to experience a sense of isolation if they lack opportunities for interaction and social engagement, and for this reason, such an initiative would eliminate the possibility of feeling lonely and isolated and be beneficial to their mental health. Furthermore, staying active and engaging in meaningful work improves their cognitive function as well as helping them maintain a sense of purpose and fulfillment, potentially leading to a happier and healthier aging process. 

In conclusion, given great benefits for financial stability, overall health conditions, and accumulation of working experience, old people should be entitled to remain relevant in the workplace.
