Task 1: The graph below gives information about the U.S. government spending on research between 1980 and 2008.

Sample

The line graph compares the figures of the US’s national budget allocated for studies of various fields from 1980 to 2008.

Generally, health researchers always had the largest funding from the state. While expenditure on health, space and general science enjoyed upswings, spending on the other categories fluctuated wildly.

After a slight fall from an eight-billion-dollar grant in 1980, the figure for health projects soared remarkably and peaked at roughly 22 billion in 2004. Despite a decline of four billion in 2008, it dominated the chart compared to the rest. Contrary to health, general science researchers always received the lowest budget allocation. This figure ranged from 3 to 4 billion in the first two decades, subsequently climbed to 5 billion in 2000 and remained unchanged throughout the rest of the period.

Starting at respective values of 7.5 and 5 billion, the expenditure on astronomy and other fields had dropped briefly before rising and standing at similar levels until 2004. Since then, their trends started to diverge, with space research ending at about 9 billion but other studies at 5 billion. Meanwhile, the spending on energy projects plateaued at 5 billion dollars from 1980 to 1992 and from 2000 to 2004. In the remaining years, the US government kept changing their budget for this sector, with the highest spending recorded in 1996 at 8 billion.

Task 2: Some people believe that success in sports depends on physical ability. Others believe that there are more important factors. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

While some attribute sportspeople’s dominance of their games to their physical capability, there are other factors that are also important. To be a high achiever in sports, I believe that more than just physical ability is required.

Good physical conditions evidently fuel any sports activity. Michael Phelps, a highly celebrated American swimmer, is known for his unusually disproportionate torso and legs. These explain his unprecedentedly powerful and fast motions, which have enabled him to be a multiple-time Olympic gold medallist. Through particular nutrition and physical training, sports professionals’ innate traits can be further developed to boost their athletic performance, especially for those doing physically exhausting sports like triathlon, road cycling and ice hockey. Physical health also proves its vital role regarding injury rates. Along with necessary prevention techniques and medical interventions, fitness helps reduce injuries and speed recovery.

That said, sportspeople could barely deliver peak performance without other qualities, especially consistency and poise under pressure. Self-discipline and hard work often top the list of elements needed to succeed in sports. The legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo exemplifies this well. He shows great dedication to his rigorous diet and fitness regime to compete in the most demanding football leagues, even in his late thirties. In addition, being subjected to close public scrutiny renders undue stress and trouble in athletes’ professional and personal lives. Anxiety before competing and self-doubt after losing further aggravate their mental health issues. Only when they nurture a positive attitude and resilience to failure may they become the top players in their games.

In summary, I believe that physical skills combined with the dedication to training and mental toughness play integral parts in the secret of elite athletes‘ success.

Sự quan trọng của yếu tố thể chất:

– Điều kiện thể chất tốt tạo lợi thế cho bất kỳ hoạt động thể thao nào.

– Thông qua chế độ dinh dưỡng và rèn luyện cụ thể, các đặc điểm bẩm sinh của các vận động viên có thể được phát huy để nâng cao thành tích của họ.

– Sức khỏe thể chất cũng chứng tỏ vai trò sống còn của nó đối với việc ngăn ngừa chấn thương và tăng khả năng hồi phục sau chấn thương.

Sự quan trọng của các yếu tố khác:
