IELTS Writing task 1

Task 1: The table shows the production of milk annually in four countries in 1990, 2000 and 2010. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample

The table provides information about annual milk production in four nations at ten-year intervals from 1990 to 2010.

Overall, the Netherlands was reported to be the leading milk producer among the four. In addition, the production levels in Australia underwent a consistent fall, while those in the other countries showed a general upward trend after three decades.

The first impression from the data is that the Netherlands’ figures in 1990 and 2000, at over 11.2 million and 11.1 million litres, respectively, almost equated to Australia’s. Dutch milk production, after undergoing similar declines, rose to nearly 11.5 million litres in 2010, whereas Australian counterparts reduced their yield by almost 2 million.

Milk production in Tanzania and Guatemala was relatively modest compared to the aforementioned countries. Tanzania’s milk yield started at 87,000 litres and experienced a massive surge to exceed 1.5 million litres at the end. Seeing a less considerable rise, meanwhile, the amount of milk produced in Guatemala reached 84,000 litres in the final year from a starting figure of 26,000.

IELTS Writing task 2

Task 2: Some people say free time activities for children should be organised by parents. Others say that children should be free to choose what they do in their free time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample

Some believe that children’s leisure pursuits should be arranged by parents, whereas others contend that children should have complete control over their free time. I am personally of the opinion that there should be a proper balance between adult-organised and child-led free time activities.

On the one hand, most children, especially pre-teenagers, lack common sense and tend to be impulsive, so they may waste time without parental guidance. Some might spend excessive time watching TV or reading comics after school, while others indulge in addictive video games and doom-scrolling. Parents therefore have a role to play in arranging leisure activities that are both enjoyable and educational for their children. Schoolchildren will benefit from pastimes like orienteering, visiting museums or joining book clubs. Such activities not only provide them with wholesome fun but also facilitate their academic performance.

Extracurricular activities also enable many parents to discover and nurture their children’s hidden talents and help them with better future orientation.

On the other hand, adults, albeit well-intentioned, may deprive children of joy and

opportunities to develop crucial skills when overly controlling them. Scientifically, boredom is part of children’s play as it stimulates creativity when they learn to occupy themselves. Being allowed to decide on their recreation may also improve a child’s problem-solving skills and make them feel self-sufficient. Furthermore, those reaching adolescence are highly sensitive and subject to mood swings due to hormonal changes, so strict parenting may put them under stress and exacerbate conflicts with family members. Because of this, the best approach is perhaps for teenagers to develop their a sense of autonomy and for parents to advise accordingly.

In conclusion, although leisure time guidance is essential for child development, children should also be given enough room to foster creativity and develop self-control in their spare time.

Một mặt, hầu hết trẻ em thiếu ý thức và có xu hướng bốc đồng, nên chúng có thể lãng phí thời gian nếu không có sự hướng dẫn của cha mẹ. Do đó, cha mẹ nên sắp xếp các hoạt động vừa mang lại niềm vui, vừa hỗ trợ việc học của con. Phụ huynh cũng có thể phát hiện và nuôi dưỡng tài năng tiềm ẩn của con mình thông qua những hoạt động trong thời gian rảnh.

Mặt khác, được phép quyết định việc giải trí của mình có thể cải thiện kỹ năng giải quyết vấn đề của trẻ và khiến chúng cảm thấy độc lập. Hơn nữa, những đứa trẻ đến tuổi vị thành niên rất nhạy cảm và dễ thay đổi tâm trạng, vì vậy việc nuôi dạy con cái nghiêm khắc có thể khiến chúng bị căng thẳng và làm trầm trọng thêm sự xung đột với các thành viên trong gia đình.
