Task 1. The maps below show the changes of a community center in 10 years time.

Bước 1: Lập dàn ý 

Đoạn tổng quan:

• Sự biến mất của hầu hết văn phòng.
• Sự thêm vào các tiện nghi phục vụ mục đích giải trí.

Mô tả sự thay đổi ở trung tâm bản đồ, tập trung vào khu vực giữa. So sánh sự phát triển của các khu vực cũ và mới. Đề cập đến việc thay đổi mục đích sử dụng không gian và các tiện ích mới được thêm vào.	Mô tả sự thay đổi ở các vị trí phía Tây và Đông của bản đồ. Tóm tắt các thay đổi lớn ở khu vực này. Đề cập đến việc sáp nhập và chuyển đổi các khu vực cũ thành khu vực mới với mục đích sử dụng khác nhau.

Bước 2: Hoàn thành bài luận

The maps illustrate changes that have taken place in a community center over a period of 10 years. Overall, the community center has undergone a number of modifications, the most significant of which are the disappearance of most offices and the addition of amenities catering for recreational purposes. 

Regarding changes in the middle of the map, a hall with a capacity of 100 people, which used to occupy a large area in the centre, remains unchanged, while the facilities to the north and south of it saw major developments. In particular, in terms of the former, there used to be a storage room, but this area has been redeveloped into another storage room whose size reduces by a half and toilets, which are adjacent to it. As for the latter, no changes have been made to the cloakroom with a reception area, whereas an office was constructed, replacing the toilets and the coffee bar.  

The area on the west and east side of the community center witnessed two primary changes, with the garden in the north-west corner being converted into an indoor sports center, and the four offices and storage room to the south of them being combined and transformed into a spacious cafe area. Finally, a parking space for cars and a kitchen area, which were situated to the left and right of the hall respectively, have remained the same throughout the 10-year period.

Bước 4: Cấu trúc ngữ pháp tốt 

• Mệnh đề quan hệ: “which are adjacent to it” (mà gần nó), “which were situated to the left and right of the hall” (mà nằm bên trái và bên phải của phòng hội trường). Những mệnh đề quan hệ cung cấp thông tin bổ sung về danh từ mà chúng bổ nghĩa.
• Đa dạng thì: “which used to occupy” (từng chiếm), “there used to be” (trước đây có), “have been made” (đã được thực hiện), “which were situated” (đã nằm ở). 
• Cụm giới từ: “in the middle of the map” (ở giữa bản đồ), “to the north and south of it” (về phía bắc và phía nam của nó), “to the left and right of the hall” (ở bên trái và bên phải của phòng hội trường). Các cụm giới từ thêm chi tiết và ngữ cảnh cho câu.

IELTS Writing task 2

Task 2: The use of mobile phones is as antisocial as smoking. Smoking is banned in certain places so mobile phones should be banned like smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 

Bước 1: Phân tích đề 

• Từ khoá: Mobile phones, antisocial, banned 
• Câu hỏi: Đây là dạng “Opinion Essay”, yêu cầu người viết cần đưa ra quan điểm của mình về việc bạn đồng ý hay không đồng ý với nhận định được đưa ra. Ở đây Vietop sẽ theo hướng phản đối nhiều hơn so với đồng tình (70-30). 

Bước 2: Lập kế hoạch cho bài luận

Ý chính: Thể hiện ý kiến cá nhân không đồng tình với quan điểm này và giới thiệu các lý do để ủng hộ quan điểm ngược lại.

Câu chủ đề: Đề cập đến tác động tiêu cực của việc cấm sử dụng điện thoại di động. Ý chính: Sự tương đồng giữa việc sử dụng điện thoại di động và hút thuốc lá về các hậu quả xã hội tiêu cực. Lập luận: – Khiến con người mất kết nối và cảm thấy cô lập. – Việc sử dụng điện thoại di động trong các tình huống xã hội gây sự mất tập trung và làm phiền người khác.

Câu chủ đề: Đề cập đến lý do không ủng hộ cấm sử dụng điện thoại di động hoàn toàn. Ý chính: Chỉ ra vai trò quan trọng của điện thoại di động & gợi ý phương hướng giải quyết hợp lý. Lập luận: – Nêu rõ các chức năng quan trọng của điện thoại di động, từ giải trí, truy cập thông tin cho đến việc liên lạc khẩn cấp.  – Đề xuất thay vì cấm hoàn toàn, chính phủ nên tập trung vào việc giáo dục người dùng điện thoại di động trở nên có trách nhiệm. Ngoài ra, cần khuyến khích thành lập các khu vực không sử dụng điện thoại di động trong một số nơi công cộng.

Sample Essay 1 (Band 6.0)

Some argue that using mobile phones is similar to smoking, being annoying and harmful to society. While there are reasons to support a ban on phones, I disagree with this view.

Supporters of the ban claim that both mobile phones and smoking have negative social consequences, leading to reduced human interaction and feelings of isolation. Phone users, like addicted smokers, focus on virtual relationships, ignoring those around them. Additionally, phone usage in social settings can cause inattentiveness and disrupt conversations, affecting others’ experiences.

However, I believe a complete ban on mobile phones is unreasonable. Phones serve essential functions like entertainment, information access, and emergency communication. Banning them would create difficulties and distress, especially in emergencies. Instead, the government should educate people about responsible phone use through awareness campaigns and establish phone-free zones in public places to encourage face-to-face interactions.

While addressing the negative aspects of mobile phone use is important, a total ban is not the best solution. Encouraging responsible phone usage can strike a balance in society.

Sample Essay (Band 8.0)

It is thought that using mobile phones bears a similarity to smoking in that both of these behaviors are annoying and harmful to society in general, which explains why there is an opinion that people should be prohibited from the use of these digital devices. Although there are certain justifications for such a proposal, I disagree with this school of thought for several reasons.

On the one hand, there are certain arguments in favor of a ban imposed on the use of mobile phones. To begin with, both mobile phones and smoking share some negative social consequences, as they are both associated with reduced human interaction and consequently feelings of isolation and detachment from the surrounding environment.

This is because mobile phone users tend to devote most of their time to surfing social media or forming virtual relationships, ignoring those around them, which is quite similar to smokers who are addicted to their cigarettes. Another explanation is that mobile phone usage in social situations, such as at meeting points, galleries, theaters or restaurants, can lead to inattentiveness and distraction.

People who are engrossed in their phones do not display active participation in conversations, which would be responsible for disengagement, misunderstanding and potential conflicts in worst-case scenarios. Besides being a source of distraction, the intrusive sounds from mobile phones may disturb and ruin the experience of others while they are concentrating in the aforementioned public places. 

On the other hand, I am of the opinion that placing a complete ban on mobile phones would seem to be unreasonable. This firstly stems from the fact that mobile phones cater for a variety of crucial functions, varying from entertainment, information access to emergency communication. This means that a complete ban would make it hard for most people to carry out their daily life’s activities effectively, and especially would result in great difficulties and distress in case of emergencies.

Instead of enforcing an outright prohibition of mobile phone usage, the government should place emphasis on striving towards an environment in which the public are educated to be responsible phone users. For instance, a publicity campaign can be held to raise people’s awareness of limiting their phone use and engaging in more meaningful face-to-face interactions. It is also essential that the government encourage the establishment of designated phone-free zones in certain public places so that people can refrain from using these handheld devices, and thus are able to stay focused and engaged. 

In conclusion, while it is understandable why the use of mobile phones can be considered as anti-social behaviour and should be discouraged, I am of the opinion that rather than imposing a total ban, the government should promote responsible phone usage.

Người viết đã đưa ra quan điểm rõ ràng, nhưng lập luận vẫn còn hạn chế và không đi vào chi tiết. Ví dụ: “Banning them would create difficulties and distress, especially in emergencies.”

Người viết trình bày một lập luận phức tạp hơn với nhiều chi tiết và ví dụ cụ thể.  Ví dụ, người viết so sánh việc sử dụng điện thoại với hút thuốc lá, đề cập đến các hậu quả xã hội tiêu cực chung và tâm lý cô lập khi sử dụng cả hai.  Ngoài ra, người viết còn nêu rõ vấn đề về sự mất tập trung và ảnh hưởng tiêu cực của âm thanh xâm nhập từ điện thoại di động trong các tình huống xã hội → Điều này làm cho bài luận trở nên rõ ràng và thuyết phục hơn.

It is also essential that the government encourage the establishment of designated phone-free zones in certain public places so that people can refrain from using these handheld devices, and thus are able to stay focused and engaged.
