IELTS Writing task 1

The diagrams below give information about a plan to redevelop an industrial site.

Bước 1: Lập dàn ý 

Đoạn tổng quan: Tổng thể, trong khi hệ thống đường xung quanh khu vực sẽ không thay đổi, khu vực bên trong sẽ chứng kiến sự thay đổi đáng kể, chủ yếu là sự biến đổi từ một địa điểm công nghiệp thành một địa điểm cư trú, thông qua việc mở rộng đáng kể của khu vực nhà ở và xây dựng các con đường riêng nội bộ kết nối các cơ sở mới xây dựng.

Liên quan đến sự thay đổi ở khu vực trung tâm của khu vực, có một sân nằm ngay giữa, phía bắc của nó là một lối vào và khu vực tiếp đãi. Sau khi được cải tạo, một dãy nhà gồm hai phòng ngủ sẽ được xây dựng, thay thế khu vực để vào khu vực, trong khi sân sẽ được biến thành khu vườn chung. Khu vực phía nam của sân hiện tại cũng được đề xuất phát triển lại, với những gara để đỗ xe được xây dựng ở nơi nay nằm vị trí của một tòa nhà văn phòng và một nhà hàng tự phục vụ.

Ở phía bên trái của khu vườn chung mới xây, một bãi đỗ xe và một phòng lưu trữ dự kiến sẽ bị phá hủy, để mở đường cho một khu vực lớn chứa các căn nhà 3 phòng ngủ và 4 phòng ngủ chiếm toàn bộ phía tây. Phần đông của khu vực sẽ trải qua việc phá hủy nhà máy ở góc đông nam và sau khi hoàn thành, người dân sẽ được hưởng lợi từ một căn hộ khác với bãi đỗ xe. Cuối cùng, việc di chuyển xung quanh khu vực nhà ở mới sẽ trở nên dễ dàng hơn với việc thêm vào ba con đường riêng tư, nằm ở phía tây, phía nam và phía đông của các khu vườn được chia sẻ bởi cư dân của khu vực.

Bước 2: Hoàn thành bài luận

The maps illustrate an industrial site as it is now and how it will look following developments. Overall, while the road infrastructure surrounding the site will remain the same, the area inside will witness significant modifications, chief among which are the transformation of an industrial location into a residential one, through the considerable expansion of a housing area, and the construction of inner private roads linking newly built facilities. 

Regarding changes in the central area of the site, there is a yard located right in the center, to the north of which is an entrance and a reception area. Following renovations, a row of houses consisting of two bedrooms will be constructed, replacing the area for entering the site, while the yard will be turned into communal gardens. The area to the south of the present yard will also be proposed to redevelop, with garages for parking vehicles being put up where an office complex and a canteen are now situated. 

On the left-hand side of the newly erected communal gardens, a parking space and a storage room are planned to be knocked down, making way for a large area for 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom houses which occupy the whole western side. The eastern part of the area will experience the demolition of the factory in the south-east corner, and on arrival, residents will benefit from another apartment with a parking space. Finally, access around the new housing area will be made easier with the addition of three private roads, which will be located to the west, south and east of the gardens shared by inhabitants of the site.

Space travel has been possible for some time and some people believe that space tourism could be developed in the future. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Environmental Impacts: Increased tourist activities can lead to the accumulation of space debris, which poses threats to operational satellites and space missions. Rocket emissions further contribute to environmental problems. 1.3. Health Risks: Prolonged exposure to space conditions can result in terminal illness and behavioral changes due to radiation, microgravity, and extreme temperatures.

Topic Sentence: Despite the challenges, space tourism holds the potential for positive developments through accessibility, environmental responsibility, and technological advancements. Supporting Ideas: 2.1. Accessibility: Efforts can be made to make space tourism more accessible, such as through government subsidies or international aid, reducing exclusivity. 2.2. Environmental Responsibility: Space tourism companies are obligated to adopt sustainable practices to mitigate space debris and minimize environmental impacts.2.3. Technological Advancements: Advances in space tourism technology can drive down costs, mitigate health risks, and promote scientific and technological progress.

Sample Essay (Band 8.0)

With travelling into space gradually becoming a fascinating venture that is no longer confined to the realms of science fiction, it is thought that space tourism could witness certain developments in the upcoming years. In my view, this development, despite raising some concerns, is a desirable one.

Admittedly, the disadvantages of journeying beyond the Earth’s atmosphere are evident. Firstly, it is widely acknowledged that space tourism is an elite industry designed to indulge the whims of the super rich. The prohibitively expensive costs primarily stem from those needed for safety measures, high energy requirements and complex technologies to launch a spacecraft into space, thus further exacerbating the issue of uneven global wealth distribution. Another apparent downside of space tourism is that there would be environmental impacts to be taken into account.

To be more specific, given an increase in tourist activities, space debris, which refers to human-made objects in orbit around the Earth that are longer functional, can become increasingly common and eventually pose a threat to satellites in operation and future space missions. Added to this, rocket emissions will further damage the ozone layer and aggravate global warming.

Finally, one of the most significant drawbacks is that the health risks involved are currently so high. Having been in space for prolonged periods of time, one could suffer terminal illness or even behavioural changes due to exposure to radiation, the absence of gravitational forces and extreme temperatures in space. 

Nevertheless, these issues can generally be resolved and there are definite rewards to encouraging the shift towards travelling into space. To begin with, even though space tourism is an exclusive leisure pursuit for wealthy people, efforts can be made to make it more accessible to the broader market; for example, through government subsidies or international aid.

However, one more important point to note here is that as technology advances and the industry progresses further, costs are expected to decrease. Secondly, current space tourism ventures have a relatively negligible carbon footprint compared to other industries, and it is obligatory for space travel companies to adopt sustainable business practices to mitigate space debris and minimize overall environmental impacts.

Finally, the development of this type of industry could encourage more young people to pursue careers in the field of science and technology, which would drive further technological advancements that only mitigate the problems associated with the aforementioned health issues but also help push back the frontiers of science and contribute to the advancement of other industries.  

In conclusion, while space travel does bring some problems, for example in the form of exorbitant costs, environmental pollution and health risks, these issues can mostly be tackled and therefore, on the whole, I believe it to be a positive development.
