There are lakes, rivers, and bays almost everywhere in Vietnam, and each one has a unique history. However, Hoan Kiem Lake, or Sword Lake as it is more commonly known in English, a small freshwater lake in Hanoi, is one that is particularly well-known because of its scenic beauty and rich stories.
Sword Lake, located in the center of the city, has long been regarded as a representation of Hanoi and the nostalgic image that the name “Hanoi” conjures in the thoughts of any Hanoians who live overseas. The name “Hoan Kiem” of the lake, which derives from the myth of King Le Thai returning a magic sword to a holy turtle after using it to slay Ming dynasty invaders, literally means “Return the sword” in English.
As a result, the lake has a unique place in the history of both the city and the nation. Sword Lake also has several unique qualities that are not present anywhere else in Vietnam, thus this is not the only thing that sets it apart. While the lake’s water is renowned for having an unchanging shade of green, the colors can vary depending on how the sky is reflected. The lake’s surroundings are covered in thick vegetation, and the trees and glistening water provide an unbeatable sense of tranquility.
Sword Lake is not only the center of Hanoi’s historic heritage but also the region’s breathtaking natural beauty. This is due to the fact that it is surrounded by several historical monuments, such as the Old Quarter, the Great Cathedral, or the architectural features from the French colonial era…
Thus, the lake serves as a gathering spot for special events and may be regarded as a major cultural hub of Hanoi, hosting numerous significant events in a range of sectors. On typical days, there are still a number of activities at the lake, such as strolling, biking, dancing, or just relaxing on the benches and taking in the scenery.
Sword Lake, one of the top attractions in Hanoi, continues to gain popularity both within and outside of Vietnam due to its distinctive beauty and historical as well as cultural significance. As a fellow Hanoian, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

1. How can lakes benefit local people?
I think lakes may be really beneficial to the neighborhood. First of all, contrasted to the typical scenery of skyscrapers and busy streets, lakes in cities offer such a welcome change of pace. These lakes can also be used for social and leisure activities like workouts or get-togethers. Lakes also have the benefit of reducing the effects of major weather events and giving locals access to cleaner air.

2. Do you think rivers attract tourists?
Well, I believe that this is generally true. Rivers and other natural waterways provide visitors—especially those who live in busy cities—an opportunity to get away from the throng and reconnect with nature. Along with getting a breath of fresh air away from the bustle of the city, they will also be able to enjoy the abundance of wildlife in the area. Although I am aware that occasionally more is required to encourage nature-based tourism than just stunning rivers and a few recreational opportunities, I’d say rivers typically serve as a draw for visitors.

3. Are rivers/lakes good for transport? Why?
I have no doubts. Rivers and lakes are two of the primary forms of water transportation, despite the fact that this may not be immediately apparent. However, given that they were once the most effective form of transportation, they were undoubtedly more significant in the past. Even though people now have more options thanks to airplanes and other means, rivers and lakes are still frequently used since they are economical and useful for moving large amounts of cargo. This kind of transportation is still common, despite its inconveniences including the threat of weather hazards or pirates.

4. Are there any disadvantages of living at the seaside?
Water may appear safe, but it may be dangerous, so it’s crucial to recognize and stay clear of hazards. Unattended bodies of water, such as lakes and rivers, may not be safe for swimming and may be full of hazards, such as chilly water, undetected rip currents, pollution, or a lack of lifeguards.

Without a doubt, people pose the greatest danger to marine life. People today engage in so many activities that species are vanishing at an alarming rate. The primary justification is to dump trash or plastic into the oceans, which contaminates the environment and endangers marine life.
