Basic Description Questions là một dạng câu hỏi của IELTS Speaking Part 1 trong lúc học IELTS thường gặp phải mà theo đó, người trả lời sẽ miêu tả về một chủ đề nào đó trong khoảng 3 đến 5 câu.
Ví dụ:
- Tell me about your hometown?
- Can you describe your house?
- Can you describe the room you live in?
Thử xem xét ví dụ sau đây:
Examiner: Tell me about your hometown?
Candidate: I come from Dong Nai. It is located near Saigon. Dong Nai is famous for fruits and milk. The weather is hot all year round.
Câu trả lời trên chưa tốt ở chỗ:
- Người nói chỉ sử dụng câu đơn, dù có nhiều chỗ hai câu có thể gộp lại tạo thành một câu phức
- Không có các linking words để nối ý lại với nhau
- Câu trả lời chỉ liệt kê một cách đơn giản
- Chưa sử dụng được các từ vựng liên quan đến chủ đề

Làm sao để trả lời tốt câu hỏi dạng Basic Description?
- Để trả lời được câu hỏi dạng Basic Description, trước hết các bạn nên hình dung trong đầu những khía cạnh của chủ đề, để từ đó lựa chọn và nói với giám khảo.
Ví dụ: Với đề bài là “Tell me about your hometown” (kể về quê của bạn), chúng ta có thể nói đến những mặt sau:
- Sau khi đã xác định được, các bạn chọn cho mình từ hai đến ba khía cạnh để đề cập, hãy tập trung nói về từng khía cạnh một cách chi tiết, không nên chỉ liệt kê.
- Thêm vào đó, đừng quên dùng từ nối để liên kết các câu lại với nhau. Sau đây là một số gợi ý giúp các bạn chuyển ý mạch lạc hơn:

| Idea #1 | – Talking about…, S +V – Regarding …, S +V |
| Idea #2 | – In addition to this,… – As well as that, … – And I should not forget to mention that … – Another thing that I would like to mention is …… |
| Idea #3 (điều mình thích nhất) | – What I like most about …. is that +S +V – I guess the thing I find most enjoyable is – The most enjoyable aspect about …is |
Ví dụ: Tell me about your hometown?
Well, I was born and raised in Binh Duong city, (Location) which is about 1-hour-drive from Ho Chi Minh city.(Weather) Talking about the weather, my hometown is located in southern Vietnam, so the weather is hot all year round. However, I have lived there since I was a kid so now I am familiar with the weather. (Attractions)As well as that, Dong Nai is famous for plenty of tourist attractions such Giang Dien Fall, Buu Long Tourist Park and Cat Tien National Park. (People) But what I like most about my hometown is that the people. They are very welcoming and are willing to give you a hand when you are in need.

Currently, I am living in a two-storey house with my family. There are 8 rooms in total: 1 living room, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 dining room and 1 kitchen. (Color) Regarding its color, my house is painted white, which makes it look very bright and elegant. (Location) Another thing that I would like to mention is the location. My house is located in a small alley in Go Vap District, so it’s very quiet. However, because there are not many eateries or stores near my house, it’s a bit inconvenient, especially when I want to grab a bite to eat or go shopping.
Can you tell me about the school/ college you go to?
Sample:
Well, I’m currently a sophomore at Hoa Sen university, majoring in Business and Administration. (Location) The biggest plus point is that the campus is located in District 1, right in the heart of the city so it’s very convenient to commute back and forth. (Facilities) The school is an educational and recreational complex with upgraded facilities including a library, swimming pools and sports center. (Quality) On top of that, Hoa Sen University has gained its popularity through its quality in education, training, and internationally recognized research for the community. (Fee, lecturers) Though the tuition fee is a bit high, the lecturers there are well-qualified and they are extremely supportive.
Can you tell me a little bit about your family?
Sample:
(Family members) I come from a nuclear family with 4 members. (Job) My parents are now in their 50s, and my older sister is turning 25 next month. (Place of living) We live under the same roof in Binh Thanh district, and feel comfortable sharing our living space with one another. (Hobbies and interests) We love watching movies, travelling and cooking and even though we all have a hectic schedule, we always try to spend some quality time together on the weekend. (Feelings)You know, like other families, we do have conflicts every now and then, but overall we get along pretty well.
