Well, actually,  I’m going to talk about something that might happen in the near future that I’m very excited for.

Recently, a rumor has been circulated that Facebook is planning to change their name in accordance with their future plans. We don’t exactly know what the name change is going to be. Some people said it was going to be “horizon”, others said “meta” was another possibility. Frankly, I don’t like any of them. They’re too generic.

What I’m truly excited about is the plan proposed by Facebook’s leaders. They are planning to combine different social media platforms which they own such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp with virtual reality technology to create a true virtual reality experience.

I mean, that would be a game changer. Nowadays, I’m tired of changing back and forth between different accounts on multiple platforms. What’s more, it might be possible that one day I could see my friends and relatives who live far away in the virtual world and not just on the flat screen of my phone. We may be able to play games or watch movies together.

This, I think, is way better than lying on your bed while holding and talking to your phones. I hope that so far my anticipation has been justified. I understand we still have to wait a long time until this prospect comes true. But as they say “Good things take time” so I will patiently wait for it to happen.

I’ve been studying English for more than 12 years now, and during that time I’ve had innumerable opportunities to attend fascinating lessons and interact with passionate teachers. But if I had to choose, Louis, my native Speaking teacher, would have taught the lesson on active listening three years ago, and it would be the one I would remember the most.

He is incredibly considerate and devoted to my beloved mentor. He is far too preoccupied giving lectures and inspiring his students to take a break for more than a minute during each and every one of his two-hour lessons.

Louis gave us instructions on how to practice that kind of listening skill in relation to the lesson’s subject in order to enhance our pronunciation. He said we could train our brains to learn from the speaker’s positive characteristics and identify their pronunciation errors if we genuinely respected them, paid close attention to them, and thoughtfully considered what they were saying. When we were able to do this, he said, we were less likely to repeat the same errors.

Considering the reasons I like this class so much, I’d say the most notable one was that it used a really unique strategy that no one had ever explained to me before, but it worked incredibly well. Since I’ve been using this method, I can almost always correct pronunciation issues on my own. Without Louis and his extraordinary plan, I would never have been able to pronounce words more precisely, naturally, and like a native speaker.

Vocab

  • Innumerable (adj): Vô số
  • Fascinating (adj): Lôi cuốn
  • Interact with (v): Tương tác với
  • Devoted (adj): Tận tâm
  • Preoccupied (adj): Bận tâm
  • Genuinely (adv): Chân thật
  • Notable (adj): Đáng chú ý

2.1. On what occasions do people usually need to wait?

Well, we wait while being served and there are people before us. We are usually asked to wait to be seated if a restaurant is fully booked at that moment. At a clinic, we have to wait until our names are called. Other times, we have to wait for events such as birthdays, festivals to come.

  • To be served: Được phục vụ
  • Fully booked (collocation): Kín chỗ

2.2. Who behave better when waiting, children or adults?

I believe any sensible adult who is aware of the reasons why they have to wait can refrain from making a fuss even when they have to wait long. Children, on the other hand, lack the social understanding when they are kept waiting and so they’re prone to throw fits and tantrums. Luckily, that changes as they grow up.

  • Sensible (adj): Am hiểu tình huống, nhạy nhảm
  • Refrain (v): Kìm chế không làm
  • To make a fuss (collocation): Cằn nhằn, phàn nàn

2.3. Compared to the past, are people less patient now, why?

Yeah, I believe so, it’s mainly due to the development of technology which has made everything faster. People have come to expect rapid service for many things that would take so much more time to do in the past. The prime example is the email. It used to take days, if not months, to send a letter and people were used to that. Now, everyone wants their message to be delivered as quickly as possible. We even get irritated if there is a few seconds or minutes delay.

  • Rapid (adj): Nhanh chóng
  • The prime example (collocation): Ví dụ điển hình

2.4. What are the positive and negative effects of waiting on society?

Waiting can teach us to be patient and patience is good for decision making. Imagine if everyone in our society can be patient, a lot less conflict would happen. In contrast, waiting can have drawbacks sometimes. Take rescuing someone as an example, any second delayed can result in devastating injuries or death.

  • Conflict (n): Mâu thuẫn
  • Drawback (n): Điều bất lợi
  • Resuing (gerund của rescue): Việc cứu hộ
  • Devastating (adj): Nghiêm trọng

2.5. How can people become more patient?

There are various approaches individuals can adopt to enhance their patience. Engaging in techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness exercises, and consistently acknowledging that progress takes time are effective strategies.

Breaking down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks and acknowledging achievements throughout the process is another beneficial practice. Moreover, incorporating relaxation-promoting activities like exercise or immersing oneself in nature can significantly reduce stress levels, contributing to increased patience.

  • Approaches individuals: tiếp cận cá nhân
  • Mindfulness exercises: bài tập chánh niệm
