IELTS Speaking part 1 topic Spending time with children

1.1. How often do you meet children?

Very frequently. I have a 4-year-old niece whom I take to the playground almost every weekend. We are very close-knit as I often take good care of her whenever her parents are away, and we spend a lot of time together.

1.2. Do you like to play with children?

Yes I truly love playing with them. Children are just so naive that they crack me up all the time. Also,  when playing with kids, we feel nostalgia from my own childhood. It allows me to vicariously relive my happy childhood memories which are never coming back. Whenever I play with my niece, I feel very happy and just plain, old nostalgia washes over me like a wave.

  • Crack s.o up: làm ai đó bật cười
  • Nostalgia (n): sự hoài niệm
  • Wash over me like a wave: tràn về trong tôi như cơn sóng

1.3. Where do you think is a fun place to go with a child?

Well, the way I see it, besides playground or theme theme parks, where there are a variety of games to choose from, the zoo is another great option to take your kids out on the weekend, as it allows for exploration and self-discovery about the animal kingdom and helps raise environmental awareness for children from a young age.

Well, when I was in primary school, art class was always my favorite and my art teacher, Ms. Yen, really left a mark on me.

Back then, as primary school children, we only got to learn arts and crafts once a week, and I was always looking forward to Ms. Yen’s art classes. My profound impression of her was that she was a young, energetic teacher with a trendy fashion style. She always showed up in the coolest outfits in color blocks, which somehow expressed her taste in art.

She was an expert painter and paper cutter, as evidenced by the fact that she could cut two butterflies in less than a minute. She seemed to have magical hands that could do anything in the blink of an eye. I, on the other hand, couldn’t keep up with her at all. I had butterfingers and struggled with scissors for a long time.

Mrs. Yen, however, did not look down on me but she personally came to me and helped me in folding a piece of paper in half numerous times. She then asked me to draw an image on it and cut it out along the lines. It did turn out a butterfly as I unfold the paper. I was jumping for joy as I nailed it, and took several bows as a way to thank her.

Ms. Yen was really patient and kind to every student and was always smiling, so I was very fond of her. After so many years, my memory of primary school is fading, but I still remember tons of moments from her art classes.

To be honest, I don’t think people are not giving enough recognition towards art teachers, especially those who work with children in primary school. Doing such a job, a person is not only passionate about art but also has to love kids from the bottom of their hearts. Ms. Yen was truly a hero to me and the time spent with her was the happiest and most carefree period of my life.

3.1. Why do people always miss their childhood?

I think people miss their childhood because it’s often much more stressful and complicated to reach adulthood. When you’re older, you have way more responsibilities than you did when you were a kid. Instead of your main priority going to class and having enough sleep, you have to pay bills, handle a full-time job, and in some cases take care of your own children. Childhood seems to be the best time of one’s life, so it’s easy for people to be nostalgic

  • Nostalgic (adj): hoài niệm

3.2. Are kids happier than adults? why?

I suppose that in some ways, kids are happier than adults. When you’re a kid, it’s not that hard to have all your needs met. You don’t have to worry about paying bills or working around the clock like adults do. Kids are content with simple things, like having a new toy or hanging out with their friends. However, a number of children nowadays are under a lot of academic pressure as well, since parents are often in high hopes of their children being able to outshine their peers at school.

  • Work around the clock: làm việc ngày đêm
  • Outshine (v): vượt trội hơn
  • Peer (n): bạn bè, người đồng trang lứa

3.3. What do people generally remember about elementary school?

As far as I know, most people would remember the friends they made during their childhood. The first friendships are often something that lingers in one’s mind, as it was in these years when people formed the most profound friendships of their life. The very first teachers were also of great importance and should be remembered as well. Most of us might not recall anything about the things we learned in elementary school, but we do remember the people we met and all the beautiful memories we had back in the day.

  • Linger in one’s mind: vương trong đầu
  • Profound (adj): sâu sắc

3.4. What kinds of primary school teachers will impress students?

I suppose that students are most impressed by primary school teachers who truly care about their children. Children at the age of 6-10 are on their way of finding their own hobbies, interests and may struggle with academic performances at school. Therefore, teachers need to be able to understand the differences between them and have the patience to be able to guide students at their own speed. Also, children in primary school have a short attention span, so the teacher needs to be enthusiastic enough to keep them focused.

  • Struggle with s.th: gặp khó khăn với điều gì
