Câu điều kiện loại 2: Công thức, cấu trúc, bài tập vận dụng

Nằm trong chuỗi bài học về câu điều kiện – Conditional Sentences hay còn gọi là mệnh đề If – If Clauses, câu điều kiện loại 2 khá phổ biến nhưng có nhiều bạn vẫn còn gặp khó khăn trong việc sử dụng loại câu này.

Định nghĩa và cấu trúc của câu điều kiện loại 2

Định nghĩa

Câu điều kiện loại 2 là loại câu dùng để nói về điều kiện không có thật, hoặc trái với thực tế ở hiện tại.

E.g.: I wouldn’t do that if I were you. (Tôi sẽ không làm thế nếu tôi là bạn.)

→ “Tôi” không thể nào trở thành “bạn” được nên đây là câu điều kiện loại 2.

Cấu trúc

Câu điều kiện thường sẽ có 2 mệnh đề, trong đó mệnh đề If chia ở thì quá khứ đơn (Past Simple tense) và mệnh đề chính là would đi kèm động từ nguyên mẫu.

Cấu trúc 1

If + S + V-ed / V2, S + would / could / should + V-bare

HOẶC S + would / could / should + V-bare If + S + V-ed / V2

E.g.: If it rained, you would get wet. (Nếu trời mưa, bạn sẽ bị ướt)

= You would get wet if it rained. (Bạn sẽ bị ướt nếu trời mưa.)

Cấu trúc 2

If + S + were / weren’t + O, S + would / could / should + V-bare

HOẶC S + would / could / should + V-bare if + S + were / weren’t + O

E.g.:

• If I were you, I would give up smoking. Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ bỏ hút thuốc.
• I would give up smoking if I were you. Tôi sẽ bỏ hút thuốc nếu tôi là bạn.

Cách dùng câu điều kiện loại 2

If + Past Simple, S + would/could/might/had to… (+not) + be + V-ing

E.g.: If today were Sunday, I would be going to the theme park. (Nếu hôm nay là chủ nhật, thì tôi đã đang đi tới công viên giải trí.)

If + Past Simple, Past Simple

E.g.: If Sue finished her homework yesterday, she were free today. (Nếu Sue hoàn thành bài tập hồi hôm qua, thì hôm nay cô ấy đã rảnh rồi.)

If + Past Continuous, S + would/could (+not) + V-infinitive

E.g.: If Jane knew Minh were sleeping, she would not play the music too loud. (Nếu Jane biết Minh đang ngủ, cô ấy sẽ không bật nhạc quá to.)

If + Past Perfect, S + would/could (+not) + V-infinitive

E.g.: If Peter had done his task last weekend, he wouldn’t be too busy now. (Nếu Peter đã hoàn thành nhiệm vụ của mình vào cuối tuần trước, thì bây giờ anh ấy sẽ không quá bận rộn.)

Lưu ý: Các cấu trúc biến thể trên đều có thể đảo được mệnh đề If ra phía sau mệnh đề chính, các bạn nhớ là phải bỏ dấu phẩy đi nhé.

Đảo ngữ câu điều kiện loại 2

Ngoài việc đảo 2 mệnh đề, trong câu điều kiện loại 2, bạn cũng có thể sử dụng đảo ngữ theo các cấu trúc như sau:

Were + S + to + V-bare, S + would/could/might + V-bare

E.g.: If I go out, I would bring an umbrella with me. (Nếu tôi ra ngoài, tôi sẽ mang theo cây dù với tôi.)

= Were I to go out, I would bring an umbrella with me. 

Were + S + Noun / Adjective,  S + would/could/might + V-bare

E.g.: If I were you, I would tell the truth. (Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ nói sự thật.)

= Were I you, I would tell the truth. 

Lưu ý:

• Đối với dạng “if + mệnh đề chính” thì phải có dấu phẩy giữa 2 mệnh đề. Còn đối với dạng “mệnh đề chính + mệnh đề if” thì không cần có dấu phẩy.
• “If I were you” hoặc “If I were in your position” được dùng diễn tả  lời khuyên.
• “Could” được dùng ở mệnh đề “if” nhằm diễn tả điều kiện có thể xảy ra theo lý thuyết, nhưng thực tế không thực hiện được.

1. I’m not going to buy that mobile phone because it’s too expensive.
2. Marc is ill. He can’t go skiing with Steven.
3. I can’t go to the movies this evening because I have to work overtime.
4. I don’t know his email so I can’t send him an invitation.
5. They don’t want to tell their mother the truth because she will get angry.

3. If I didn’t have to work overtime, I could go to the movies this evening. / I could go to the movies this evening if I didn’t have to work overtime.
4. If I knew his email, I could send him an invitation. / I could send him an invitation if I knew his email.
5. If they told their mother the truth, she would get angry. / Their mother would get angry if they told her the truth.
