IELTS Writing task 1

The line graph shows the past and projected finances for a local authority in New Zealand. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Đoạn tổng quan: Cơ quan địa phương đã trải qua một tình hình tài chính khá lành mạnh khi có sự tăng đáng kể cả về thuế và phí sử dụng dịch vụ của người dân, trong đó thuế luôn duy trì là nguồn thu chính, trong khi số tiền mà tổ chức vay mượn và các khoản trợ cấp và hỗ trợ tài chính duy trì ở mức thấp.

Về hai nguồn thu, vào đầu giai đoạn, cơ quan đã tạo ra một doanh thu gần dưới 1500 triệu đô la, và mặc dù có một giai đoạn ổn định ban đầu trong năm 2003, thu nhập sau đó tăng mạnh, đạt đỉnh gần 2400 triệu đô la vào năm 2022.  Các khoản phí mà người dân phải trả để tận hưởng các dịch vụ do cơ quan cung cấp cũng có khuynh hướng thay đổi tương tự như của doanh thu, mặc dù ở mức nhẹ hơn. The line graph gives information about the financial situation of a local authority in New Zealand over a 10-year period between 2012 and 2002.

Overall, the local authority experienced healthy finances as there were noticeable increases in both rates revenue and user charges, with the former consistently providing the main source of income, while the amount of money that the organization borrowed, and grants and subsidies remained significantly lower.

In terms of two sources of earnings, at the beginning of the period, the authority generated a revenue of just under $1500 million, and despite an initial 1-year period of stability in 2003, its rates revenue then rose substantially, reaching a high of close to $2400 million in 2022. Fees that are required to pay to enjoy the services offered by the authority also exactly mirrored revenue’s changing patterns, albeit at a slightly lower rate. Their data grew from second highest initially ($1000 million) to approximately $2000 million by the final year. 

As for the two remaining areas, borrowings fluctuated continually over the course of a decade, with their figures falling to a trough of nearly $600 million in 2016 and peaking at roughly $1500 million in 2020. In contrast, money in the form of grants and subsidies was generally the lowest, increasing from below $500 million in 2012 to its highest point of around $800 million four years later. However, from the year 2016 onwards, this funding gradually declined, and by the final year, had fallen to $500 million.

Bước 4: Cấu trúc ngữ pháp

“However, from the year 2016 onwards, this funding gradually declined, and by the final year, had fallen to $500 million.”

Trong câu “had fallen,” ngữ pháp “had” là một dạng của động từ have dùng để tạo ra thì quá khứ hoàn thành (past perfect tense) trong tiếng Anh. Thì này thường được sử dụng để chỉ sự kiện xảy ra trước một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ.

Trong câu của bạn, “had fallen” (đã giảm) được sử dụng để chỉ sự giảm dần của tài trợ qua thời gian, bắt đầu từ năm 2016 và kéo dài đến năm cuối cùng. Nowadays celebrities earn more money than politicians. What are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or negative development?

In today’s society, there’s a noticeable trend where famous people earn much more money than those in politics. This income gap has various reasons and, in my view, has both advantages and disadvantages.

The main reason for the income difference between celebrities and politicians is their salary systems. Politicians typically receive fixed salaries set by the government, while celebrities’ incomes vary greatly based on their influence. Celebrities can make money through their personal brand, social media presence, and endorsements, both nationally and internationally. They often work in industries like movies, sports, and fashion, where there’s high demand from fans willing to spend on entertainment and merchandise. In contrast, political issues are complex and less appealing to the public, so politicians rely on their fixed salaries.

This income gap has positive and negative effects on society. On the positive side, wealthy celebrities often contribute to charitable causes, making a positive impact. Additionally, the entertainment industry generates jobs and revenue, benefiting the economy. On the downside, this difference may discourage people from pursuing political careers, potentially affecting effective governance. It might also promote materialism and admiration for luxurious celebrity lifestyles.

In conclusion, the income gap between famous individuals and politicians is mainly due to their salary structures, celebrity branding, and entertainment industry demand. While this benefits the financially disadvantaged and the economy, it may deter people from politics and encourage materialism.

Sample Essay (Band 8.0)

In our contemporary society, there has been a growing trend in which the amount of money earned by famous people is more significant in comparison to that of those working in politics. This enormous income gap could be attributed to a number of reasons, and in my opinion, is a mixed blessing. 

At root of the income disparity between celebrities and politicians is arguably their salary structures, which are fundamentally different. In other words, people working in political fields often have fixed salaries which are determined by government regulations, whereas those of celebrities vary a great deal based on the extent of their influence.

Indeed, famous people can leverage their personal brand, social media presence and fan base to launch their business or engage in lucrative celebrity endorsements, domestically and internationally. Such an enormous income gap could also stem from the fact that public figures frequently operate within sectors such as movies, sports, and fashion, all of which are driven by consumer demand.

People are ready to spend substantial sums on entertainment featuring their idols, be it for movie or concert tickets, merchandise or endorsements, thus enabling celebrities to earn substantial incomes. By contrast, political and social issues are generally of no interest to the public because of being complex and multifaceted, which explains why few citizens know the names of any politicians, and consequently they cannot earn any additional salaries besides the fixed monthly ones. 

A discrepancy between famous people and politicians in terms of earnings would have both positive and negative impacts on society. On the one hand, many wealthy celebrities tend to use some of their earnings to support charitable causes or engage in philanthropic activities, contributing to positive social impact. Moreover, from an economic perspective, by creating job opportunities and generating revenue, the entertainment industry would make a significant contribution to economic development.

On the other hand, one can deduce from this stark difference that engaging in politics might not be a worthwhile pursuit. Consequently, this could result in fewer individuals choosing a political career, while also fostering an unhealthy admiration for the luxurious lifestyles of celebrities. The former consequence might hinder government effectiveness and governance, while the latter could encourage a materialistic culture. 

In conclusion,  what lies at the core of the huge difference between famous individuals and politicians is their salary structures, the monetization of celebrities’ personal brand and the market demand of the entertainment industry. This phenomenon would benefit financially disadvantaged people and the economy, while also at the same time  weakening people’s interest in having a career in politics and promoting a materialistic mentality.
