IELTS Writing task 1

The table below shows the number of temporary migrant workers in 4 countries in 2003 and 2006 and the number of these workers per 1000 people in these countries in 2006.

Đoạn tổng quan: Nói chung, có xu hướng tăng về số lao động di cư làm việc tạm thời ở tất cả bốn quốc gia được kiểm tra, với Anh có sự tăng trưởng đáng kể nhất. Cũng đáng chú ý là mặc dù có số lượng lao động di cư tạm thời lớn nhất trong cả hai năm, nhưng vào năm 2006, Mỹ có con số thấp nhất được ghi nhận.

Năm 2003, số người di cư để làm việc tạm thời tại Hoa Kỳ dẫn đầu, với 577.000 người, nhiều hơn rất nhiều so với Australia và Anh, với các con số tương ứng là 152.000 và 137.000. Ngược lại, rất ít người di cư chọn có công việc tạm thời tại New Zealand (65.000).  Trong ba năm tiếp theo, Anh gần như trải qua một sự tăng gấp đôi, lên đến 266.000 và vượt qua Australia, với sự tăng nhẹ lên 219.000. Trong khi đó, số người di cư tạm thời tại Hoa Kỳ và New Zealand tăng nhẹ lên chỉ lần lượt là 678.000 và 87.000. Đáng chú ý, vị trí của họ trên bảng vẫn không thay đổi so với năm 2003.

The table gives information about how many migrants worked temporarily in four countries in two years (2003 and 2006), along with the number of such workers out of 1000 people in the year 2006. 

Overall, there was a rising trend in the number of short-term migrant laborers in all of the four countries examined, with that of the United Kingdom seeing the most significant growth. It is also noticeable that despite having the majority of temporary migrant workers in both years, out of 1000 these individuals in 2006, the United States had the lowest recorded figure. 

In 2003, the number of people migrating to work temporarily in the United States took the lead, at 577,000, which far outnumbered that of Australia and the United Kingdom, with respective figures being 152,000 and 137,000. By contrast, very few migrants chose to have a short-term job in New Zealand (65,000). Over the following three years, the United Kingdom nearly experienced a twofold growth, rising to 266,000 and overtaking Australia, which saw a slight rise to 219,000. Meanwhile, marginal increases were observed in the United States and New Zealand, whose numbers of temporary migrant workers grew just to 678,000 and 87,000 respectively. Notably, their positions in the table still remained unchanged in comparison to the year 2003. 

21.1 out of 1000 migrants worked for a short time in New Zealand in 2006, which was almost twice as high as Australia, at 10.7 per 1000 people. These figures contrast starkly with those for the remaining countries, which accounted for just 4.4 and 2.3 out of 1000 people in the United Kingdom and United States in that order.

It is a natural process for animal species to become extinct. There is no reason why people should try to prevent this from happening. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people advocate that there is no need for human intervention to prevent the inherent and inevitable process of natural extinction of animal pieces. In this essay, I will challenge this school of thought, on grounds of human responsibility for mainly causing such occurrences, and the adverse impacts of animal extinction on human life, ecosystem and scientific advances. 

Firstly, activities carried out by humans are the main culprit behind the unprecedented rate of species extinction today. These activities, including habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation of natural resources, pose serious threats to the destruction of once unspoiled animals’ habit, and accordingly the survival of hundreds of valuable species of fauna. In fact, there is a general consensus that extinction induced by humans occurs at a significantly faster rate than natural extinctions. Given this, it is argued that ethical and moral obligations compel humans to take urgent measures to prevent extinction due to their major role in accelerating the process.

Secondly, animals can have a noticeable influence on human life. Indeed, humans have an inextricable relationship with wildlife, which means that the extinction of a wild animal could seriously threaten the survival of mankind. Coral reefs, for instance, are incredibly diverse ecosystems that support numerous marine species and provide livelihoods for millions of people through tourism and fisheries. The extinction of coral species due to factors like climate change and pollution can lead to the collapse of entire reef ecosystems, impacting both marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. This is a testament to how investing in the protection of a wild animal is synonymous with safeguarding and enhancing the existence of humans. 

Lastly, the loss of animal species could detrimentally affect the ecosystem and thus hinder progress in the field of science. Ecosystems comprise a complex web of interdependencies among species, with each species having a unique and important role to play. As a result, when one species is lost forever, these intricate relationships are damaged, leading to disrupted food chains and ultimately a decline in biodiversity. Moreover, there is no doubt that besides allowing better chances to withstand and recover from environmental changes, maintaining biodiversity, or in other words, diverse ecosystems, is fundamental to scientific advancements, including the discovery of new medicines and treatments that would tremendously improve our quality of life.  

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that it is of great importance for humans to take actions in order to slow down the extinction rate of animal species, otherwise the implications for overall human life are too overwhelming.
