IELTS Writing Task 1

Task 1: The graphs below show the number of medals won by the top five countries in the summer and winter Olympics.

Sample

The bar charts provide data on all-time medal statistics of the most successful nations competing in the Winter and Summer Olympics.  

Overall, significantly more medals have been awarded to Summer Olympians than Winter ones. In addition, the United States, Germany and Russia have been among the top medal winners in both events.

Throughout the history of the Winter Olympics, Norweigian sportspeople have won approximately 370 medals which has been the highest recorded total. The figure for American athletes has been slightly lower, at 305. There are also roughly equal shares of golds, silvers and bronzes in these countries’ figures. Germany has achieved 240 medals in this competition, slightly higher than the numbers for Russia and Canada, with under 200 each. In addition, the three countries have won more golds than silvers and bronzes, and their gold totals range from 70 to 90.

Meanwhile, the U.S won over 2500 medals and topped the chart at the Summer Olympics. Russia and Germany came in second and third, with 1850 and 1700 medals respectively. The lowest figures belong to Great Britain and France’s medallists, with around 850 medals won by the former and 750 by the latter.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Task 2: Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports, while others think people should have freedom to do any sports or activity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample

There are a few different schools of thought on whether or not governments should ban dangerous sports. In my opinion, though the government has a responsibility to protect its citizens from potentially deadly activities, people should have the freedom to engage in any activity they choose, even if it carries some risk.

Banning dangerous sports may be justified for their inherent health hazard. First, although some activities may carry a small risk of injury, others may be fatal to the participants. A skier may, for example, break his neck if landing on his head, and such physical suffering is bound to leave long-term anguish. Second, extreme sports pose particular dangers to both viewers and organisers. Mountaineering has taken the lives of some who led climbs and treks, while cases of motorists crashing into crowds of fans who watched the races live have been reported.

However, risk management has been practised well thanks partly to continuously enhanced protective gear. Helmets, goggles, and elbow and knee pads are mandatory for skiing since they statistically prove to lower injury rates. Strict safety rules also contribute to minimising possible hazards. Mountain climbers are supposed to inform somebody else of their routes, start and finish points, and estimated time of return because this facilitates rescue operations in emergencies. Ultimately, freedom of choice is a fundamental human right. One should be allowed to follow his passion and take full responsibility for his well-being.

In conclusion, policymakers should not step in and prohibit extreme sports on safety grounds since there are equipment and regulations to handle dangerous situations. Individuals should instead decide whether or not to partake in an activity.
