The table shows how distinct geographical areas of the world were impacted by the key drivers of global land degradation during the 1990s, while the pie chart lists these causes in order of importance over the same period.

Overall, the main causes of agricultural land degradation worldwide were over-cultivation, overgrazing, and deforestation. Furthermore, compared to Oceania and North America, Europe had a far larger percentage of damaged land.

The leading cause of land degradation worldwide was overgrazing, which was responsible for over a third of the planet’s degraded land. Another 30% and 28%, respectively, came from over cultivation and deforestation.

In the 1990s, Europe had the highest percentage of degraded land among the three areas, at nearly a quarter. However, deforestation, which reduced the productivity of 9.8% of the land there, rather than excessive grazing, was the main contributing factor. Oceania, which had 13% of its land deteriorated overall and 11.3% of it due to overgrazing, was the second most impacted region. The fact that Oceania did not over-cultivate its soil is also notable. In contrast, only 5% of the land in North America was completely degraded. The main factor was once again overcultivation, which accounted for 3.3%.

Task 2

Deforestation caused by human activity is happening in many parts of the world, with serious results for the environment. What do you think can be done to solve this problem?

Global deforestation is currently on the rise, which has numerous negative impacts on both the ecosystem and the habitats of various animals. Therefore, it is crucial to implement a number of preservation measures instantaneously in order to safeguard the earth’s lungs and environmental wellbeing, which would be subjected to careful discussion during the course of this essay.

To begin with, the development of a country may profit greatly from the timber industry. Nevertheless, each nation’s government must enact stringent logging rules to prevent the exploitation of wood in order to promote sustainable growth and preserve the ecosystems and biodiversity. To increase adherence to forest protection rules, harsher penalties should be applied for unauthorised logging and forest devastation.

In terms of society, substantial education about the value of forests is required, along with public awareness-raising initiatives for environmental issues. From an early age, individuals need to be instructed to respect the natural environment and the important role that forests play on the planet. Furthermore, communities should develop a sense of obligation to protect forests as a result, and initiatives for forest conservation would garner widespread support in addition to increased application. Last but not least, reusing wood-based products including paper, packaging, crates, furniture, and timber is one of the most practical and effective actions that everyone can take. Additionally recyclable, these goods significantly lower the amount of wood consumed.

Finally, every region of the world should take responsibility for preventing deforestation with a combination of solutions since forests are a splendid privilege to the planet that helps to sustain biodiversity and environmental well-being.
