Đề bài

Describe a tall building in your city you like or dislike

You should say:

  • where it is what it is used for
  • what it looks like
  • And explain why you like or dislike it

Sample

I’m going to talk about a building called “The Bitexco Financial Tower”. It’s located in the center of HCM city close to where I used to work. At the time, it was the tallest building in Vietnam, and I often passed by it daily when I was still with my last job.

So, as its name suggests, it’s a high-rise building. On the outside, it has an unusually looking shape like an ear of corn. So my colleagues and I jokingly called it the “corn building”. Ah, it also resembles the Stark Tower from the Iron Man movie with the helicopter pad sticking out from the side. It’s situated in the center of HCM city, a place with lots of business. As a matter of fact, it’s a commercial building.

The only time that I went inside the building was for a meeting. My company and their partners rented a conference room so we could discuss business. My first impression of the interior of the building was that it was really clean and spacious. There were so many office units and rooms for meetings. The room we used was fully furnished and was really modern.

In the end, the meeting went well and I was quite satisfied with the facilities. I like the overall experience with Bitexco tower and I recommend people to consider this place for business meetings.

2.1. What are the disadvantages of living in tall buildings?

Well I think the fact that we have to rely on elevators to get to the high floors is a drawback. In case of an electricity outage, there is no way for a person who lives on one of the top floors to get there. And also, many people living in the same building can also make disease outbreaks more probable.

  • Electricity outage : sự mất điện
  • Probable (adj): có khả năng

2.2. Why do some people like to live in tall buildings nowadays?

Off the top of my head, there are a few reasons. First, buying an apartment tends to be less costly than purchasing a house. Young people, like myself, who haven’t got a lot in their savings account often consider owning an apartment as their first home. Second, there are people who don’t like living on the ground level because of the amount of noise. Living in the higher floors can minimize the effects of traffic noise.

  • Ground level (adj + n): mặt đất

2.3. Do you think there will be more tall buildings in the future?

This is almost a certainty as it’s projected that the human population worldwide will cross the 10 billion mark. More people means the population density will rise and land will become more expensive. To avoid a housing shortage, apartment buildings should be built from now on. More people also leads to more enterprises being created to satisfy their demands. Consequently, more cheap office units will be wanted by these businesses and high-rise commercial buildings can provide that.

  • Certainty (n): điều chắc chắn
  • Shortage (n): sự thiếu hụt
  • Consequently (adv): hệ quả là
  • Population density: mật độ dân số

2.4. Why aren’t there many tall buildings in the countryside?

Population density and the number of businesses in the rural areas show an opposite trend to what happens in cities. There usually are fewer people in the countryside so there isn’t any need for apartments and apartment buildings. Same goes for businesses! Because there aren’t many enterprises that originated in the countryside, there isn’t a demand for office space.

  • Originate (v): có nguồn gốc từ
