Describe an occasion when you ate something for the first time
You should say:
- What food it was
- When it happened
- Where you ate it
- And explain how you felt about it
Sample
I’m going to talk about the first time that I ate pancakes for breakfast. A couple years ago, I was visiting my cousin who lived in the USA at the time. I was really hungry and when my cousin came to pick me up at the airport, so I asked her to drive to an American food restaurant.
She took me to a small and packed restaurant. Later, I found out it was a pancake house. The restaurant seemed like it was run by a family. None of the tables were available so we had to wait to be seated. My cousin explained that the other customers were Sunday church goers.
Eventually, we got seated and my cousin ordered for me what was called “Buttermilk Pancakes”. When the order was served, I was astonished by the size of the portion. It was enough to feed me twice. Visually, it was really appealing. There were about 5-6 fluffy pancakes stacked on top of each other. Their colours were light brown on the surface and cream yellow on the side. A piece of butter was placed at the very top, it was being melted by the heat and dripped down.
I poured just a little bit of maple syrup and ate them. The first bite in, I tasted a combination of sweetness and richness of butter. I liked cakes in general and I had a sweet tooth. Naturally, I became a fan but I could only eat about half of the portion.
After the trip, I even learned how to make the dish and now I have my own recipe to save me from the occasional cravings.

Part 3
1. What kinds of foreign food are popular in your country?
Off the top of my head, Korean BBQ is all the rage among my peers. Another Asian cuisine that is prevalent in Vietnam is Chinese and we love the Chinese noodles and dim sum dishes. About 30 years ago, American fast food chains like KFC started opening in Vietnam thus introducing us to the hamburger and American style fried chicken.
- all the rage: rất được ưa chuộng
- prevalent (adj): rất dễ thấy
2. What are young people’s opinions about new food?
Ooh, we love trying new things. I may be biased but this generation is extremely open minded and gutsy. We love to try new things and we aren’t afraid of seemingly strange food. Therefore, we welcome foreign restaurants in our country and on occasions we travel abroad to eat authentic foreign cuisines.
- biased (adj): thiên vị
- seemingly (adv): có vẻ
3. More and more people are unwilling to cook. Why is this happening?
I can speak from experience that this phenomenon stems from the lack of cooking skills and time. Even though I work for 8 hours a day. I still don’t have much time after subtracting the time for commuting and time I spend learning new skills and entertainment. Because I feel inadequate in this technologically advanced age, so after work I take classes on coding. On top of that, whenever I cook the quality is always subpar compared to the food I get at a restaurant which really discourages me to cook more often.
- phenomenon (n): hiện tượng
- to stem from: bắt nguồn từ
- inadequate (adj): không đủ (giỏi)
- subpar (adj): tệ
