1. What place do you most like to visit? 

It is what we call an “acoustic café” in Vietnam. Acoustic cafes  sell beverages and host performances by singers and acoustic guitarists.

2. How often do you visit this place? 

I go there every Saturday night after finishing my homework. There’s always a mini show at that time.

3. Why do you like it so much?

As a student, I can’t really fork out 500.000VND to go to a concert. Going to this place is a way cheaper alternative and arguably more fun because you can interact with the artists on stage more easily. 

• To fork out (phrasal verb): chi trả
• Alternative (n): lựa chọn

4. Is it popular with many other people? 

Yeah, as far as I can see, many of my friends also enjoy going to such places. It’s a good way to escape from your daily life. 

• As far as I can see: theo tôi thấy
• To escape (v): thoát

5. Has it changed very much since you first went there?

Apart from it being more crowded these days, nothing else has changed. And that is one of   the reasons why I keep coming back to this place.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a special day out that cost you little money/didn’t cost you much

You should say:

• When the day was
• Where you went
• How much you spent
• And explain how you feel about the day

I’m going to tell the story about my last birthday picnic. 

You know, at the time, the covid-19 lockdown had just been lifted a little bit. And I really wanted to celebrate my birthday outdoors after months of being confined in my house. So, I chatted with only three of my closest friends online to invite them because I didn’t want a big crowd. They all loved the idea so we agreed to meet at a nearby park as we couldn’t travel far. 

On that day, we met at the park. Each of us had to prepare something and I was assigned to bring the canvas sheet that we used to sit on, and the beverage. I’d borrowed the sheet from my mum and purchased a couple large bottles of soda which didn’t cost a lot. One of my friends brought snacks while the other two were responsible for getting a small birthday cake. 

During the picnic, we mostly talked and asked how each other were doing. Then, we had a little ceremony in which I blew the candles while they were singing happy birthday. After that, we ate the cake and listened to some music on the speaker. The cake was surprisingly delicious, and I was happy and thankful, because finally I was able to be outside and breathe fresh air again. 

This was nowhere near the most glamourous birthday but certainly it’s one of the most memorable that I’ve ever had. 

• to be lifted (v, passive): được tháo dỡ, gỡ bỏ
• to be confined (v, passive): bị nhốt, giam. 
• to be assigned to (v, passive): được giao nhiệm vụ
• glamourous (adj): lộng lẫy, hoành tráng

→ Câu hỏi yêu cầu phải tả một buổi đi chơi mà bạn không tốn tiền hoặc tốn ít tiền.

Thí sinh có thể xem đây là một câu chuyện hoặc một activity đã xảy ra trong quá khứ nên lưu ý các tình tiết chính phải trong các thì quá khứ. Đặt biệt phải làm rõ chi tiết về chi phí của chuyến đi trong phần trả lời. Ngoài ra còn phải sử dụng các liên từ về trình tự (first, then, next, after that…) để kết nối diễn biến câu chuyện. Trình tự gợi ý: 

Giới thiệu → Khâu chuẩn bị → Tình tiết chính trong chuyến đi → Cảm nghĩ về chuyến đi.

1. Do people like to spend their leisure time outside in your country?

It really depends on personal preferences. On the one hand, there are people who would spend their leisure time indoors since it can get quite hot in my country. When it’s scorching outside, it’s not a bad idea to wind down at home watching a movie or getting extra naps. On the other hand, there are people whose happiness comes from being out in nature. They enjoy breathing fresh air, listening to bird songs, and having picnics. I think I’m the latter. 

• On the one hand/On the other hand: Một mặt,…Mặt khác…
• Scorching (adj): nóng như lửa/thiêu đốt

→ Câu hỏi yêu cầu đánh giá liệu người tại quốc gia của thí sinh có thích dành thời gian rảnh ngoài trời hay không. Trước hết người trả lời nên khẳng định có hay không hoặc “it depends”. Sau đó cho lí do/ví dụ để làm rõ hơn câu trả lời. Trong trường hợp trả lời “it depends” phải nói cân bằng giữa hai lựa chọn, và nên sử dụng các cụm từ như “on the one hand/on the other hand” để cho người nghe biết mình đang nói đến ý nào. 

2. How do people spend their leisure time in your country?

There are many things for people in my country to do in their free time. For entertainment, there are loads of cinemas and karaoke places. These are activities that are suitable for people who have a couple of free hours at a time and can be quite fun.

Socialising, such as hanging out with your friends in cafes and malls, are popular among Vietnamese regardless of age. There is an emerging activity that is popular among the younger generation, and that is hobby workshops where you can learn skills such as making pottery, painting, and cooking. 

• Socialising (gerund): hoạt động xã giao
• Regardless of (adverb): bất kể
• Emerging (adj): đang trở nên phổ biến

→ Câu hỏi yêu cầu thí sinh nêu và miêu tả cách mà người ở quốc gia của thí sinh sử dụng thời gian rảnh. Nói cách khác là miêu tả những việc người ta làm trong thời gian rảnh. Người trả lời có thể nêu nhiều loại hoạt động. Ở mỗi hoạt động, khai triển bằng cách cho thêm thông tin/cho ví dụ/lí do. 

3. How does technology affect the way people spend their leisure time?

There are both positive and negative effects brought by technology when it comes to activities we do in our free time. On the positive note, we have the internet, computers and mobile phones that provide affordable entertainment. Nowadays, people don’t need to travel to cinemas and stadiums to watch movies and sports matches. The internet also helps people to be more proactive in terms of taking up a hobby. There are countless tutorials and lessons that you can watch online and teach yourself a skill. However, technology can also bring bad habits like constantly looking at your phone screen while being out with your friends.

• Proactive (adj): chủ động
• Tutorial (n): hướng dẫn  

→ Câu hỏi yêu cầu thí sinh miêu tả tác động của công nghệ lên việc mọi người sử dụng thời gian rảnh. Có nhiều cách để trả lời, ví dụ, phân ra thành các ảnh hưởng tốt và xấu (như câu trả lời mẫu) hoặc trong quá khứ và hiện tại (lưu ý sử dụng thì quá khứ khi nói về chi tiết ở quá khứ).
