Today, I would like to share with you a little pricey activity that I enjoy doing sometimes. It would be shopping. As a shopaholic, I always splurge out on new clothes. Honestly, I only got this hobby when I graduated from university and got a well-paid job. When I was in local shopping malls, I went on a shopping spree, including new clothes, cosmetics, and other grooming products.

Sometimes, because of hearing alluring and misleading advertisements, I bought some items that weren’t necessary and useful at all and I had to throw them away immediately when coming back home. As I often paid through the nose, I was often on a tight budget. But now, somehow, I could say that I am a wiser buyer, I often carefully make a list of necessary things before going shopping.

Through that, I can save a great amount of money, I haven’t made any unnecessary purchases recently. And now, I don’t have the interest in buying high-end products which often cost an arm and a leg anymore, because I have to save for a rainy day.

I occasionally indulge in the relatively pricey activity of going to the cinema, with CGV being my preferred choice. CGV is the largest film distributor and cinema operator in Vietnam. While I do receive some discounts as a university student, for summer blockbusters and newly released hits, I often find myself paying the full ticket price, which averages around 200,000 VND, including the cost of popcorn.

Since I rely on monthly allowances from my parents, splurging on this activity can sometimes lead to overspending and exceeding my tight budget. Nevertheless, I firmly believe it’s worth every penny!

The experience of watching movies at CGV is truly exceptional. The larger-than-life screens and immersive sound systems allow me to fully appreciate the vivid visuals and captivating audio. Moreover, the service at CGV consistently meets my expectations, with helpful staff and state-of-the-art facilities that enhance my movie-going experience. In comparison to other cinemas located near my home, where tickets are more affordable, CGV’s service is on a whole different level.

Despite the relatively high cost, I consider a trip to CGV cinema an ideal way to unwind and enjoy some quality leisure time, especially as a college student.

3. IELTS Speaking part 3: Buying expensive things

Mời bạn cùng nghe Podcast bài mẫu Part 3 của IELTS Vietop nhé:

3.1. What kind of expensive things do people like to buy?

I think it varies from person to person. Some people fancy designer clothes, watchers or bags, which can be prohibitively expensive. Others are keen on catching up with the latest technology trend, so technological gadgets like mobile phones and cars and motorcycles are things they frequently replace.

In my opinion, this is not necessarily a bad thing unless it impacts their experience as the purchaser. If the product is less useful, less effective, or doesn’t even achieve the intended purpose, this is a clear sign that it’s time to bite the bullet and buy the real deal.

  • Designer (n) clothes: quần áo thiết kế
  • Prohibitively expensive: cực kỳ đắt đỏ

3.2. What is the difference between men and women buying things?

Men and women shop in very different ways, which should come as no surprise. It is believed that women spend more time shopping than men, who simply walk into a store, look for a specific product, buy it as quickly as possible and then leave.

Women, on the other hand, patiently search for the type of product in all available brands, compare the designs, check for any available offers, bargain, and ultimately purchase the product to their complete satisfaction. Therefore it can even take a whole day for women to actually finish their shopping.

  • Come as no surprise: Không có gì bất ngờ
  • Take + period of time: chiếm bao nhiêu thời gian

3.3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being rich?

Self-determination is at the luxury end of the hierarchy of needs. And when you’re very wealthy, within reason you can do what you want, where you want, when you want, and a lot of the time with who you want. As a result, you can prioritize your wants and needs over anything else, while less advantageous people sometimes have to sacrifice a lot for money.

However, the thing is rich people still get depressed very easily, just like the middle classes. There’s no evidence that money actually makes you unhappy, but it could distract you from fixing your real problems in life, including your relationships with others.

  • Wealthy (adj): giàu có
  • Wants and needs: những nhu cầu
  • Distract (v): gây xao nhãng

3.4. Why are some sports expensive? Are they for everyone?

Some of the sports, especially adventure sports, are expensive because they require licenses, professional training and expensive safety equipment. Tickets to professional sporting events are sometimes expensive for numerous reasons, including the rise in professional sports players’ salaries and the construction of expensive arenas. So overall, I don’t think everyone can afford such expensive services and sport lovers can always go for more affordable alternatives

  • Adventure sport: thể thao mạo hiểm
  • Safety equipment (n): đồ bảo hộ
  • Go for: lựa chọn
  • Affordable (adj): có giá cả phải chăng
  • Alternative (n): lựa chọn khác, cái thay thế

3.5. What types of leisure activities are popular in your country?

When discussing clichéd activities, one might think of traveling, shopping, or playing games. However, in recent times, there has been a noticeable increase in engagement with social initiatives, particularly during the summer months when students are on break from school. Many young individuals seize this three-month window as an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in underprivileged communities.

They engage in activities such as teaching young children in rural areas or participating in blood donation drives. On an individual level, these activities provide a sense of personal fulfillment. Yet, when viewed from a societal perspective, it is an encouraging indication that kindness is becoming more widespread in our community.

  • Clichéd activities: hoạt động sáo rỗng
  • Noticeable: đáng chú ý
  • Underprivileged communities: cộng đồng thiệt thòi

3.6. Do men and women enjoy the same leisure activities?

I believe there are hobbies that appeal to both genders, and I can mention a couple, such as watching movies or listening to music. Nowadays, young people tend to be quite practical, some might even say materialistic. Whether they are male or female, many are engrossed in creating TikTok videos. Initially, they may do it for enjoyment, but the outcome of these videos can be rewarding. For instance, if a short video goes viral, the creator might receive lucrative advertising offers, resulting in financial gain.

  • Materialistic: nặng về vật chất
  • Lucrative advertising: quảng cáo sinh lợi

3.7. Why is it important for people to have time for leisure activities?

In my opinion, dedicating time to leisure activities is essential for individuals. Firstly, it provides an opportunity for people to take a break from their studies or work, which can significantly boost morale after a certain period of personal enjoyment. Secondly, engaging in leisure activities allows individuals to form connections outside of their professional lives, whether it’s with friends or a significant other.

  • Engaging: hấp dẫn
