Any species (including animals, plants, fungi, etc.) which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future.

7. Habitat (n): môi trường sống

The place where a plant or animal live

Example:

• Many species are threatened in the wild due to habitat destruction by man.

8. Preservation (n)

Protecting resources, ecosystems and structures for present and future generations

• preserve (v): giữ gìn, bảo quản

Example: The governments are working for the preservation of the environment.

9. Conservation (n)

The protection of the natural environment/ the act of preventing something from being lost, wasted, damaged or destroyed

• conserve (v) : bảo tồn

Example:

• Environmental conservation generally works in favour of maintaining the status quo.
• Energy conservation reduces your fuel bills and helps the environment.
• The zoo is doing major conservation work, both in captivity and in the field.
• The conservation of tropical forests is of crucial importance .
• Recycling is an important part of the conservation of resources.

SỰ KHÁC BIỆT GIỮA PRESERVATION VÀ CONSERVATION:

Về cơ bản thì khi dịch sang tiếng Việt, hai từ preservation và conservation có nghĩa tương đối giống nhau.  Conserve không có nghĩa là bảo vệ cái gì đó khỏi nguy cơ biến mất mà giữ gìn, bảo vệ cái gì đó có giá trị sử dụng lâu dài, cần duy trì để sử dụng trong tương lai. Trong khi đó, PRESERVE mang hàm nghĩa giữ gìn, bảo quản (cái gì, ai) theo đúng nguyên trạng vốn có của nó hoặc giữ trong điều kiện tốt.

10. Population (n): quần thể

A group of plants or animals of the same species that live in the same area and have the opportunity to breed with each other.

Example: 

• The elephant population is dwindling.
• The deer population has increased substantially in recent years.

11. Sustainable (adj): bền vững

Using resources in ways that do not deplete them

Example:

• Sustainable development implies a long-term perspective.

12. Shelter (n)

Protection from danger/bad weather – chỗ ở (của con người), chỗ ẩn náu (của động vật khỏi thời tiết xấu hoặc mối hiểm nguy nào đó)

Example:

• There was no shelter for these animals after the forest had been cut down.
• They built a primitive shelter out of tree trunks.
• Human beings need food, clothing and shelter.

13. Awareness (n): nhận thức

Example:

• Environmental awareness has increased dramatically over the past decade.
• Politicians now have much greater awareness of these problems.

14. Food chain (Nphr): chuỗi thức ăn

Example:

• Every animal in the food chain draws nourishment from other animals or plants.
• When one of the links (species) in a food chain is no longer present (for example a species goes extinct or a feral animal takes over), the food chain breaks.

15. Reproduce (v): sinh sản

Reproduction (n):

Example:

• Many single cell organisms reproduce by splitting in two.
• Bacteria reproduce by dividing and making copies of themselves.
• Lobsters can reproduce a lost limb.
