1. Family Idioms về các thành viên trong gia đình

  • To run in the family

Ex: Heart disease runs in my family. I try to have a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.

  • Like father, like son: giống hệt nhau

Ex: I am tall just like my father, and we have the same smile. Like father, like son.

  • Like two peas in the same pot: anh em giống nhau

Ex: The twins like two peas in the same pot, I can’t tell them apart though I meet them everyday at class.

  • To follow in someone’s footsteps

Ex: He decided to follow in his father’s footsteps by choosing law instead of medicine for his major.

  • To be a chip off the old block: con giống ba/mẹ như đúc

Ex: Tiffany is an accomplished pianist just like her mother. She’s a chip off the old block.

  • To take after someone

Ex: I take after my father. We both love football and like to work with machine.

  • A spitting image of another family member

Ex: She is the spitting image of her mother. They both have blue eyes and dimples.

  • The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

Ex: He ended up in becoming a hot-headed person just like his father. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  • To be in one’s blood

Ex: Law is in my blood. I’m a lawyer, and so is my father, my grandfather, and two of my aunts.

2. Family Idioms về tình cảm giữa các thành viên

  • To be someone’s pride and joy: là người khiến người khác vô cùng tự hào và hạnh phúc.

Ex: She retired early to spend time with his kids. They’re his pride and joy.

  • To be one big happy family: là một gia đình hạnh phú

Ex: From the outside, they seem like one big happy family, but they they always fight behind closed doors

  • Bad blood: chỉ một mối quan hệ thù ghét/không ưa nhau giữa 2 người.

Ex: You don’t see those two talking to each other anymore because they have bad blood with each other.

  • To be the apple of one’s eye: chỉ ai đó hoặc cái gì đó đẹp hơn tất thảy những thứ khác trong mắt một người;

Ex: Our grandson is the apple of our eye. We absolutely adore him.

  • Apple doesn’t fall far from tree: Con nhà tông, không giống lông cũng giống cánh

Ex: This year, he has just won the 1st prize in Math Competition. He studied so well, just as his father. You know that, apple doesn’t fall far from tree.

  • Get along with (hoặc get on with): Hợp tính

Ex: I feel unfortunate that I don’t get along with my sister

  • To have a falling out with someone: nghĩa là có một sự bất đồng làm hủy hoại mối quan hệ với người đó.

Ex: I had a falling out with my mom a few years ago and we haven’t spoken to each other since then.

  • Come hell or high water: dù có chuyện gì xảy ra đi chăng nữa

Ex: My mother said that, though anything came hell or high water, she promised stand by and wait for me to come back.

3. Một số Family Idioms khác

  • Bring home the bacon: kiếm tiền nuôi gia đình

Ex: My mom – as a housewife, she does all the household chores, while my dad – as an officer, works outside and brings home the bacon.

  • Break one’s neck: nai lưng ra làm cật lực

Ex: My parents want us to try hard and use all of the effort for studying. They don’t want us to care for anything else. In fact, they break their neck, try to fulfil our requirements for life expense.

  • Go/ turn grey: đầu bạc

Ex: Parents work so hard to raise the children that their hair turn grey over the time.

  • To wear the pants in a family/To rule the roost: người có quyền lực nhất trong gia đình.

Ex: My mother definitely wears the pants in the family. My dad only thinks he does.

Ex: When we were kids, my oldest sister ruled the roost. She made all the decisions and always told us what to do.

  • A family man: người đàn ông của gia đình

Ex: He never goes out with his coworkers after work, truly a family man!

  • The black sheep: là thành viên cá biệt trong gia đình

Ex: He became the black sheep of the family by getting into jail for murder.

  • The breadwinner: là lao động chính trong nhà, là người kiếm được nhiều tiền nhất.

Ex: I didn’t see my father as much as I saw my mother. He was the breadwinner of the family and worked long hours.

  • Men make houses, women make homes: đàn ông xây nhà, đàn bà xây tổ ấm

Ex: Folks rumoured that men make houses, women make homes. So, in Viet Nam, men often work outside to earn money, while women takes care for home.

  • A red letter day: ngày đáng nhớ

Ex: The day when my father was safe, came back after the 2nd World War was the red letter day of my family.

  • To be born with a silver spoon in their mouth: có nghĩa là được sinh ra trong một gia đình giàu có và đặc quyền.

Ex: I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had to work two jobs to put myself through college.

  • Blood is thicker than water: nó có nghĩa là mối quan hệ với các thành viên trong gia đình mạnh mẽ và quan trọng hơn mối quan hệ với những người bên ngoài gia đình. Có thể nói đơn giản là một giọt máu đào hơn ao nước lã

Ex: Of course he is going to side with his sister in this argument. Blood is thicker than water.

  • Flesh and blood: máu mủ ruột rà

Ex: I cannot believe he’s stealing from us. He is our own flesh and blood.
