Tìm hiểu cấu trúc allow và cách sử dụng chi tiết

Động từ “Allow” là một động từ vô cùng quen thuộc khi chúng ta học tiếng Anh ngay từ những ngày đầu. Tuy nhiên, việc dùng động từ Allow như thế nào cho đúng vẫn còn là khó khăn mà nhiều học sinh và người học tiếng Anh. Trong bài viết ngày hôm nay, Vietop xin gửi đến các bạn phần kiến thức tổng quan về cấu trúc allow cũng như cách sử dụng cấu trúc này.

Các cấu trúc Allow phổ biến

Trong tiếng Anh, “Allow” (động từ) có nghĩa là cho phép, chấp nhận, thừa nhận.

E.g.: You are allowed to go. (Bạn được phép rời đi.)

I do not allow myself to judge him and would not have others do so. (Tôi không cho phép mình đánh giá anh ấy và sẽ không để người khác làm như vậy.)

Cho phép ai đó làm việc gì đó

Ta có cấu trúc sau:

E.g.: Tom’s parents won’t allow him to stay out late. (Bố mẹ Tom không cho phép cậu ấy đi chơi muộn.)

Cho phép việc gì đó, hành động gì đó được diễn ra

Ta có cấu trúc sau:

E.g.: Do they allow parking here? (Người ta có cho phép đỗ xe ở đây không?)

Cho phép ai đi đâu, vào đâu, đứng dậy hay rời khỏi

Ta có cấu trúc sau

E.g.: If you don’t have a ticket, they won’t allow you in. (Nếu bạn không có vé, họ sẽ không cho phép bạn vào.)

Cân nhắc đến việc gì, cho phép việc gì xảy ra trong dự tính

Ta có cấu trúc sau

E.g.: We have to allow for the possibility that we might not finish on schedule. (Chúng tôi phải cân nhắc đến khả năng chúng tôi có thể không hoàn thành đúng tiến độ.)

Sự cho phép, chấp nhận, nhường chỗ cho cái gì

Ta có cấu trúc sau

E.g.: The facts are allowed of only one apology. (Những sự thật chỉ được chấp nhận bởi một lời xin lỗi.)

Câu bị động của cấu trúc Allow

Cấu trúc Allow dạng bị động như sau

E.g.: My mother allows me to stay up late on weekends. 

→ “Mẹ tôi cho phép tôi thức khuya vào cuối tuần.” – đây là câu chủ động.

Chuyển sang bị động: I am allowed to stay up late on weekends (by my mother). 

Phân biệt Allow và Permit

Trong tiếng Anh, 2 động từ Allow và Permit đều có nghĩa là chấp nhận, cho phép. Cấu trúc chủ động và bị động của hai động từ này đều giống nhau, do đó trong đa số trường hợp, chúng đều có thể thay thế cho nhau.

E.g.: We don’t allow/permit smoking in our house. (Chúng tôi không cho phép hút thuốc trong nhà của chúng tôi.)

Tuy nhiên, giữa 2 động từ này có vài điểm khác nhỏ, đó là:

• Sắc thái nghĩa của Permit trang trọng hơn Allow.
• Allow được dùng với tiểu trạng từ (adverb particles) còn Permit thì không.

E.g.: They wouldn’t allow me in. (Họ sẽ không cho tôi vào đâu.)

KHÔNG NÓI They wouldn’t permit me in.

Cấu trúc bị động It chỉ được dùng với Permit.

E.g.: It’s not permitted to smoke here. (Không được phép hút thuốc tại đây.)

KHÔNG NÓI It’s not allowed to smoke here.

Phân biệt Allow và Let

Dù cùng mang nghĩa cho phép, chấp nhận nhưng Let là động từ “bình dân”, ít trang trọng nhất. Khi sử dụng Let, ta thường có cấu trúc như sau:

E.g.: She let me look at the photos. (Cô ấy cho tôi xem ảnh.)

*Lưu ý: Bạn chú ý là với Let thì ta không thể dùng cấu trúc bị động.

E.g.: The children were allowed to do whatever they wanted.

KHÔNG NÓI The children were let do whatever they wanted.

Let có thể được dùng kèm với tiểu từ trạng từ (adverb particles), trường hợp này thì bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc Let ở dạng bị động.

E.g.: They didn’t let me in, so I was let down. (Họ không cho tôi vào, vì vậy tôi đã thất vọng.)
