Cách làm Multiple Choice trong IELTS Reading

Phân loại câu hỏi Multiple Choice

Cần phân biệt 2 loại câu hỏi trắc nghiệm thường xuất hiện trong bài Reading là dạng hỏi ý kiến tác giả (opinions) và dạng hỏi về dữ liệu (facts)

  • Writer believes/claims/states that…
  • According to the author/writer,…
  • The author tries to prove that….

Ví dụ:

“Water is the giver and, at the same time, the taker of life. It covers most of the surface of the planet we live on and features large in the development of the human race. On present predictions, it is an element that is set to assume even greater significance.

The writer believes that water:

A. is gradually becoming of greater importance.

B. will have little impact on our lives in future.

C. is something we will need more than anything else.

D. will have even greater importance in our lives in the future

These conclusions are the result of extensive research carried out over the past 20 years around various countries into the effect of banning tobacco advertising. In Scotland it was found that the incidence of smoking fell by 30% in the 18-24 age group after legislation prohibiting the advertising of tobacco products in all print media was introduced. A separate piece of research in the United States of America found that when tobacco advertising was banned in 34 states, this reduced the level of smoking by 50%.

What were the findings of the research in Scotland:

A. anti-smoking legislation was more effective in the USA

B. advertising of tobacco products had less effect on old than on young people

C. the legislation was unpopular with the print media

D. almost a third of young people stopped smoking after the legislation

-> Đáp án đúng là câu D vì dữ liệu : a third (1/3) tương đương với 30%; young people tương đương với the 18-24 age group.

Một số tips khi làm bài

Một số Tips khi làm bài
Một số Tips khi làm bài

“Everyone has their own copy of the textbook supplied by the central education authority, Monbusho, as part of the concept of free compulsory education up to the age of 15. These textbooks are, on the whole, small, presumably inexpensive to produce, but well set out and logically developed.” (One teacher was particularly keen to introduce colour and pictures into maths textbooks: he felt this would make them more accessible to pupils brought up in a cartoon culture.)

1. Maths textbooks in Japanese schools are

A. cheap for pupils to buy.

B. well organised and adapted to the needs of the pupils.

C. written to be used in conjunction with TV programmes.

D. not very popular with many Japanese teachers.

-> Đáp án là câu B. set out = organized; more accessible to pupils = adapted to the needs of the pupils. Ngoài ra, đáp án A có tính từ cheap = inexpensive, tuy nhiên nếu đọc hết câu trong bài sẽ thấy mục đích là để sản xuất (to produce) chứ không phải để học sinh mua (to buy). Vì vậy A không thể là đáp án.

“So what are the major contributing factors in the success of maths teaching? Clearly, attitudes are important. Education is valued greatly in Japanese culture; maths is recognised as an important compulsory subject throughout schooling; and the emphasis is on hard work coupled with a focus on accuracy.”

1. Why do Japanese students tend to achieve relatively high rates of success in maths?

A. It is a compulsory subject in Japan.

B. They are used to working without help from others.

C. Much effort is made and correct answers are emphasised.

D. There is a strong emphasis on repetitive learning.

-> Đáp án đúng là câu C. Ở đây có 2 vế được paraphrase: the emphasis is on hard work (sự chăm chỉ) = Much effort (nhiều nỗ lực) is made và correct answers are emphasized = a focus on accuracy = sự tập trung vào các câu trả lời đúng.

“The general consensus of opinion is that left-handedness is determined by a dominant right cerebral hemisphere controlling the left side of the body, and vice versa. Hereditary factors have been ruled out.”

1. In determining left-handedness, hereditary factors are generally considered

A. as important.

B. as having no impact.

C. as being a major influence.

D. as being the prime cause.

-> Đáp án là câu B. rule out = loại bỏ = no impact = không có sự ảnh hưởng nào. Ngoài ra các đáp án A,C và D rất tương đồng nhau (important: quan trọng, major influence: sự ảnh hưởng to lớn, prime cause: nguyên nhân chính)

The sense of smell, or olfaction, is powerful. Odours affect US on a physical, psychological and social level. For the most part, however, we breathe in the aromas which surround US without being consciously aware of their importance to US. It is only when the faculty of smell is impaired for some reason that we begin to realise the essential role the sense of smell plays in our sense of well-being.

Odours are also essential cues in social bonding. One respondent to the survey believed that there is no true emotional bonding without touching and smelling a loved one. In fact, infants recognise the odours of their mothers soon after birth and adults can often identify their children or spouses by scent. In one well-known test, women and men were able to distinguish by smell alone clothing worn by their marriage partners from similar clothing worn by other people. Most of the subjects would probably never have given much thought to odour as a cue for identifying family members before being involved in the test, but as the experiment revealed, even when not consciously considered, smells register.

In spite of its importance to our emotional and sensory lives, smell is probably the most undervalued sense in many cultures. The reason often given for the low regard in which smell is held is that, in comparison with its importance among animals, the human sense of smell is feeble and undeveloped. While it is true that the olfactory powers of humans are nothing like as fine as those possessed by certain animals, they are still remarkably acute. Our noses are able to recognise thousands of smells, and to perceive odours which are present only in extremely small quantities.

Most of the research on smell undertaken to date has been of a physical scientific nature. Significant advances have been made in the understanding of the biological and chemical nature of olfaction, but many fundamental questions have yet to be answered. Researchers have still to decide whether smell is one sense or two – one responding to odours proper and the other registering odourless chemicals in the air. Other unanswered questions are whether the nose is the only part of the body affected by odours, and how smells can be measured objectively given the non¬physical components. Questions like these mean that interest in the psychology of smell is inevitably set to play an increasingly important role for researchers.
