Task 1

The diagrams below show changes of a cinema from 1980 until now. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample

The maps depict modifications made to an unspecified cinema from 1980 to the present day. Overall, the cinema underwent extensive renovations, with the addition of more cinemas and various other amenities to the left-hand and right-hand sides.

In 1980, the cinema was largely vacant with only two cinemas, the first of which was sited to the immediate left of the entrance, the second of which was positioned to the relatively unoccupied right-hand side. Over the next 40 years, this part of the cinema was filled with three additional cinemas, with the original Cinema 1 and 2 relocated to the left-hand side.  

Other major changes include the addition of facilities that cater for the various needs of moviegoers. An area in which food and drink are served and a room for relaxation are established, taking up the space where there was once Cinema 1. Additionally, the old drink stall in the right corner near the entrance was converted into a DVD shop. The parts that are left unchanged include the toilet (now sited between Cinema 1 and 2) and the ticket box office to the left of the entrance.

Task 2

Some people say that modern technology has made shopping today easier, while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample

Opinions differ as to whether advanced technology today assists shopping. Even if it bears some inconveniences such as the absence of try-on opportunities and inadequate refund policies, I personally believe this development brings more benefits because it saves time and energy, offers more choices, and provides more product details.

On the one hand, online shopping can fall short at times. One distinct drawback is the fact that for clothes purchased online, trying on is virtually impossible. Not having the ability to physically check the products can be an issue since the purchased item can be unfit or have some minor details they do not favour. Refund policy can also be deemed disadvantageous for some reasons. The aforementioned problem of ill-fitting clothing or unnecessary details make shoppers, in some cases, want to exchange to another product or even a refund. Since the trade is conducted electronically, reimbursement can be quite time-consuming and complicated as filling out a set of forms as well as waiting for responses from the stores are really a daunting task.

Advocates, on the other hand, have a strong argument when supporting this development. The first striking benefit is resources and time can be easily saved. People today tend to click on items from an e-commerce website and pay online, even though it is late at night or early in the morning, rather than traveling a long drive to a big-brand store. Bargain hunters can conveniently shop more than they used to, and online stores are highly competitive with other stores, which drives prices down. Price-comparison websites make deal hunting easier and they can find the most affordable online retailers. Another notable feature is public feedback by verifiable clients. By reading reviews submitted by other shoppers, people can quickly find the shop with the best reputations or the most worth-buying item.

In conclusion, my firm conviction is that as long as shoppers select carefully items to shop online based on their types and reviews, digital technology is indeed a valuable tool for shopping due to its time-saving functionality and a wide variety of competitive pricing.
